yeah waterpump is a big job as far as labour goes.
The pump itself is about $200 but most of the cost is in pulling the front of the motor down to fit the damn thing.
Thats why a lot of blokes get the pump changed when the timing belt is done, you are only up for one set of labour costs. Also I believe that if the water pump goes it farks your motor, dont know if this is true ot not though.

NL 3.5l auto with front & rear lockers,winch, custom 3.15 T/C gears
With you truck running
CAREFULLY take a long screw driver and place it on the housing near the pully
Put your ear on the handel of the screwdriver
The noise will travel up the screwdriver like a stethescope (sp?)
If it is the bearing you will hear a rough sound
do the same on the back of the pump too
Cheers

Disconnect the drive belt and see if the noise stops. Could be any one of bearings in the tensioners and not the p/steering or the water pump.Allan Mac wrote:Guys,

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading
Do the screwdriver trick on all the pulliesDisconnect the drive belt and see if the noise stops. Could be any one of bearings in the tensioners and not the p/steering or the water pump.
One pully will be noisiers than the others
If it is high pitched squeel try rubbing dry soap on the fan belt
What you need to is found out exactly where the noise is comming from
Thanks guys for all your suggestions; greatly appreciated . Will give all of them a try tonight or 2morrow morning & report back. Spoke to Mitsubishi dealer & got quote on both waterpump & power steering pump. $850 for water & $430 for power.
Ian, had my timing belt replaced a couple of years ago & at time was told waterpump was in perfect nick, but I know this can change very quickly.
Might be just coincidence, but when away last trip, got a bit of water on motor from a deepish river crossing & never noticed any noise prior to this. Also, gave engine a good clean with the high pressure washer as well.
Once again, thanks everyone for assisting this 'no hoper', when it comes to mechanical things.

If you want to also try tipping a cup of water on to the belt as the motor is running. This will give you an idea if the belt is worn and rubbing against the sides of the pulleys and not down into the grooves. The noise will change or possibly go away. Mine makes this noise when the belt's getting close to worn out.
Shorty Gen2, lots of stuff and more to come!
Well verdict is power steering pump. Anway, I said put a new one in & was told vehicle would be ready at 4.30pm. Went to pick it up & guess what, vehicle not ready . Apparently wrong power steering pump was delivered & might take some time to find correct one . Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but I would have thought the later model pajs would have the same power steering pump as my NL , (same engine), so I expected MMA to have plenty around. Am not happy, as was planning to go for a bit of a play at Toolangi on Sunday .
