GQ Coil Springs - Which one
GQ Coil Springs - Which one
So which is the best spring to get . I want wheel travel and heaps of it, on a GQ Patrol with a steel bullbar and towbar and 130lt fuel tank.
I'm not looking at road handling manners or how it looks after I've packed it to the hilt, what I'm chasing is a spring that will work well with Long Travel Shocks, off road. What is everybody running? any good set ups out there any bad combo's.
So would Medium rate springs be the best choice, I want to tell the salesman what I want not what he wants me to buy as he has it in store now.
I'm waiting on Legislation, on the final verdict on vehicle lift, so after reading about the topic in this forum perhaps a 3" Lift is in the my price range before the cost gets ugly.
What do I need?

OK... well with the load you're talking about you wont be able to run really soft springs.
If it's LWB then 3" is normally the OK price point but the long range tank could cause complications. If it's SWB then the 2" is the major price point.
The impending legislation if it remains unchanged (which is highly unlikely) will basically be capping people to 2" suspension lifts. If you're concerned about that then you should only get 2" lift.
Kings, Dobinson, EFS etc. Most have a range of spring rates to choose from.

3" coil will accomadate your 33" tyres. A soft rate coil will be 215 lbs/inch (front) and 220 lbs/inch (rear). A more moderate coil that will allow good flex and prolong fatigue will around the 250 lbs/inch (front) and 270 lbs/inch (rear).
Due to your tank mass I would suggest a 3.5" to 4" coil in rear end to allow for addittional deflection at static height.
Talk to the guys at EFS, TJM or ARB about these coil rates and heights.

I have OME 75mm springs and 'L' series shocks. The spring are 300lb front and 280lbs rear. I have a trayback SWB with mid mounted 8274 and the batteries are at the back of the deck. With this It sitts almost level and has closer to 100mm lift due to the lighter wieght but I can get seriously airbourne and not bottom the suspension. All I've had to do is lower the transfere case about 12mm but I do have a small vib at about 40k's. One things to watch is I have damaged a shock where it hit the bumpstop platform on the diff. (drivers side) For the price, this would be a very hard pakage to beat!
