Answers needed on buying a 93/95 Disco
Okay when i say im new to landies you cant get any greener than me. My mate just spent 25k on a 2000ish v8 disco and i have to admit that its a sweet car, nice interior and very smooth.
So the drama is i have a budget of 10k But im hoping that i will still be able to get myself a decent disco for that.
I have decided to go for the v8 purely becasue with the current prices of fuel here in WA there is no real advantage with a diesel and i just love the v8 for beach work.
A few questions i have
- Do these cars benifit from a sport tuned exhaust system??
-A dealer has here a 93 with a 3.9v8( I think it was updated), auto and he wants $8k and 1.2k for 3 yrs of good warranty. It is so stock its not funny and has done 190k. Does that sound like an okay deal??
- What year would be the best to go for and what engine is the best to get in my price range.
This car is pretty much gonna be a daily driver with some beach work thrown in and the occasional dirt track.
Thanks heaps in advance for your help:)

discos
I bought a 96 3.9 on duel fuel 280,000kms about 2 months ago for $8500. But id have to say mine was not the best example as since i have spent $1200 getting small things fixed still a few things to go but im am happy with it. Runs very well even with that many kms some people have told me they are good for around 500,000 if looked after.
For 10k i would look at the 94-96 model and under 200k if possible, if its dual fuel then even better, any engine will benefit from a free flow exhaust 2.5" with free flow muffler and resonator in the rear will give power and a nice note. I have seen some real bargains lately like a 96 es V8 auto, full leather interior 220k for $7800.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
I dont know what it is with WA but most of the disco's here are a bit more expensive. I dont want the hassle of shipping interstate.
I have seen one that im pretty keen on. Its got 220k v8 on gas 5 spd manual and pretty sweet all round....Needs a bit of work and the heater core behind the dash needs to be replaced but apart freom that its in pretty good nick.
He was after 8500 and i have got him down to 7500.....i think its a fair price.
what do you guys think??

i've got a 97 disco that i have just decide to sell, getting a company car and the wife does not want to drive it. its a V8 auto. just had a new cargo barier fitted, new discs and pads about 5000km ago. serviced every 10000km. 5 x cooper stc aprox 15000 old. winch arb bull bar ( no winch ) heaver duty old man emu springs to suit bar and winch ( raised it about 1.5 inches )
car has done a genuine 114,000 km.
some light scratches down the side (would buff out)
and it DOES NOT leak oil.
$10K and its yours.
im just down the road abit though, Geelong Victoria.
Catch a jetstar plane to avalon (i'll pick you up)
would make a nice drive back.

The man who dies with the most toys is still dead.
That would depend on what year it is, you want to avoid the LT77 gear box if you can. If it has an R380 then it would be ok.Shark wrote:I dont know what it is with WA but most of the disco's here are a bit more expensive. I dont want the hassle of shipping interstate.

Sorry its all done!!!! I bought the car tonight:):)
Such a nice drive home...sat on 110 and it was only on around 2250 revs.
Anyone know how to work the bloody cruise control or is it one of thoses things that its a optional extra to get the electronics to go with the buttons
Took a while to get used to the clutch but will do in no time.
How much would a decent extractor and exhaust combo cost???
And a safari snorkel??

Fuel guage with a mind of its own/ fuel consumption
I've just bought a 1993 RRC, 3.9V8, ZF auto.
I'm getting about 22l/100km out of it at the moment. Not real good, but better than when it had no vacuum advance and a 'stuck open' thermostat.
I've put a new 82deg thermostat in and replaced the dissy with a bosch scorcher which gives out a very healthy spark. Timing is about 5deg.
I think its still running rich. What to change next, the temp sensor?
Also, the fuel guage doesn't seem to correlate too well with the actual consumption. Its all over the place.
Also, this model has the filler right at the top of the guard and doesn't seem to want to fill the tank very easily. Is this normal for this model.

Sorry
Sorry should have been new topic!!
That is the norm for a landy on lpg. You could improve on that if you fit a closed loop kit that reads the ego and adjusts the mixture to suit.Shark wrote:yeah should of been
Just checked my consumption tonight...im getting 5 kms per litre from gas...Pretty good hey

Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
Leaks will come from timing case, valley cover, rocker covers, i'm not sure if disco's are prone to the dreaded power steering pump leak or not.
Extractors will cost about $450 - $500, so for approx. $750 you should be able to get extractors and a nice 2.5 " free flow exhaust system.

Unfortunately they are. Mine leaks quite a bit, and is getting worse. I recently stumbled across a power steering fluid on the internet (from a reputable manufacturer) that claims to stop/reduce leaks, but I can't remember who/what it was.Loanrangie wrote: i'm not sure if disco's are prone to the dreaded power steering pump leak or not.
Any suggestions would be helpful, cos I believe they are expensive to fix.
By the way, welcome to Landy ownership, Marc. You'll love it in spite of (or because of?) all their quirks.
Cheers, Ian
