If you run 12.5's on a 8" rim with those wheel arch flares, is that going to be legal, more concern about the legality from an insurance point of view rather then getting a fine, the fine is nothing, but if I have an accident on the road them I am screwed.

Thats best checked with your insurance company, and don't accept a just a "That should be Ok" over the phone. Get yourself a yes in writing from them

remember with claws they are smaller then what is listed my mate has 35x13.5 bias claws and when i had my JT'2s they were over 1" taller then his 35" claws. but yea for mud simex is the go i have had JT2's and now ET2's and cant fault them perform faultless in the boggy mud.

Insane I understand that the ET2's are the ultimate in mud, but I really want a universal tyre, that is good in mud but also it must be good for other surfaces as well, sometimes it will be driven on the road (like last weekend I took it to Wilsons Prom) that was a 2hr black top treck, also I will be taking it camping and towing the dirt bikes around, from what I am reading the Radial Claw will be the best all rounder and also the best Radial tyre in the mud.

My brother runs a set of 35 creepys on his SWB Patrol and says it does drive better than it did with 33 BFG muddies even towing a camper van thou he does have to run 40 psi which does tend to bulge the tyre a little in the center.Im not sure about the legalities as far as running the bias ply tyre on a later vehicle but i wouldn't think it was an issue as long as the tyre was DOT approved which unless they've changed i'm sure the creepy's are as i went through all this before getting my brothers for him!.As for the Claws i don't think i've spoken to any one that could bag them for what they are designed for as they are an excellent off road tyre with a comprimise on road use as most serious 4wd tyre will be.I would probably think twice about bias ply if your going to use them as a daily drive tyre but if they are for weekend blasts through the bush go for it .As for 12.5's on 8 inch rims it depends what vehicle yor talking about as i didn't read the full story to find out what your driving but it would be unlikely 12.5's on 8's will be a problem on an 80 or patrol but a hilux or courier would be another story!!

I have a 60 series cruiser, its not a daily driver, I only use it on weekends, although I will use it primeraliy for takin on day outings up bush, I will also be towing the dirt bikes about and occasioanlly on day trips or weekends camping, which may involve several hours of black top driving, I think this has been my deciding factor that will make me stick with a radial tyre, im 95% sold on the Mickey Thompson Radial Claws

Now im confussed about how much this thing is lifted, I got told on here that center of hub to the top of the wheel arch I should have 19" on the front and 18" on the rear, I done the measurment and ive got 21 3/4" on both front and rear, there is 7 leafs in the front and the rear as well as airbag shocks in the rear, ive just got to work out how much lift I have so i know how much further i need to take it to fit the 35's on.

:shock: in creepys.... man thats way too high :roll:

I find at that high pressure (i never went over 32psi) the tyres got very floaty and really add to the effects of incorrect castor.
I ended up runing on 20-25 onroad (id reccomend 25psi in a heavy nissan, maybe 30psi in the arse with the camper on) and offroad anything from 12psi to as low as 4psi....

I did see a group off fellas out ormeau once wheeling a shitbox patrol :D :finger: with 37 inch creepys at about 20psi :roll: no point in having them on at that pressure :!:

(1) A tyre fitted to a vehicle with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes must be suitable for road use at the lesser of:

(a) 100 kilometres an hour; and

(b) the vehicle's top speed.

(2) This rule applies to a vehicle instead of the tyre speed category requirements in the relevant ADR.


52 Tyres — manufacturer's rating

(1) This rule applies to a motor vehicle if the vehicle:

(a) has 4 or more wheels; and

(b) was built after 1972; and

(c) has a GVM not over 4.5 tonnes.

(2) However, this rule does not apply to a tyre if the tyre:

(a) is recommended by the vehicle builder as suitable for limited use on the vehicle in special circumstances at a speed less than the speed applying to the vehicle under subrule (3); or

(b) is being used in an emergency as a temporary replacement for a tyre complying with this rule.

(3) A tyre fitted to a motor vehicle must, when first manufactured, have been rated by the tyre manufacturer as suitable for road use at the lesser of:

(a) a speed of at least:

(i) for a car with special features for off-road use — 140 kilometres an hour; or


(ii) for another car — 180 kilometres an hour; or

(iii) for another motor vehicle — 120 kilometres an hour; and

(b) the vehicle's top speed.

Example for paragraph (a) (i)
A four-wheel drive vehicle.


(4) This rule applies to a vehicle instead of the tyre speed category requirements in the relevant ADR.

53 Retreads

(1) A tyre that is retreaded before the commencement of this rule must not be used on a vehicle if:

(a) Australian Standard AS 1973-1976 Retreaded Pneumatic Passenger Car and Light Truck Tyre or Australian Standard AS 1973-1985 Retreaded Pneumatic Passenger and Light Truck Tyre applies to the tyre; and

(b) the tyre was retreaded after publication of the Australian Standard; and

(c) the tyre was not retreaded in accordance with Australian Standard AS 1973-1976 Retreaded Pneumatic Passenger Car and Light Truck Tyre, Australian Standard AS 1973-1985 Retreaded Pneumatic Passenger and Light Truck Tyre or Australian Standard AS 1973-1993 Pneumatic Tyres — Passenger Car, Light Truck and Truck/Bus — Retreading and Repair Processes.

(2) A tyre that is retreaded after the commencement of this rule must not be used on a vehicle if:

(a) Australian Standard AS 1973-1993 Pneumatic Tyres — Passenger Car, Light Truck and Truck/Bus — Retreading and Repair Processes applies to the tyre; and

(b) the tyre was not retreaded in accordance with the Australian Standard.

Note The Australian Standards mentioned in this rule require various markings on retreaded tyres. These may include a speed rating less than the rating originally marked on the tyre.


54 Tyre tread
(1) A tyre on a motor vehicle must not have cleats or other gripping devices that could damage road surfaces.

(2) Except at tread wear indicators, a tyre fitted to the vehicle must have a tread pattern at least 1.5 millimetres deep in a band that runs continuously:

(a) across:

(i) for a vehicle with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes — at least 75% of the tyre width that normally comes into contact with the road; or

(ii) for another vehicle — the tyre width that normally comes into contact with the road; and

(b) around the whole circumference of the tyre.

(3) A vehicle must not be fitted with a tyre that has been treated by recutting or regrooving the tread rubber, unless the tyre was:

(a) constructed with an extra thickness of rubber designed for recutting or regrooving; and

(b) labelled to indicate the construction.
This is the tyre information from the Australian Vehicle Standards Rules.
From my interpretation of this...

Bias tyres can be run as long as:
You don't mix and match (can't have a couple of Bias and a couple of Radials on at the same time.)
They exceed the axle load carrying capacity of the vehicle (or placarded load rating requirements).
They have a speed rating of N (140km/h) or greater.
They are rated by the manufacturer as suitable for road use.

Bias Claws pass as do most of the Bias Simex. Maxxis Creepys aren't speed rated high enough and nor are Swamper.
Having said that, Radial Claws are more than likely going to do the job for you more than adequately. I usually run the Bias tyres as a second set, or on vehicles that aren't daily drivers.

And how much do you think I should be paying per tire and per wheel.

another option which will be available shortly will be the maxxis trepadore it will be mainly in radial construction and sizes will range from 31" up to 40".
they will also have limited sizes in bias ply as well .
(still waiting on stock to arrive and recieve pricing)

hhhmmmmfffff.. here we go again. Dunno where you are quikazz but if it's vic then it goes like this...
Rim width increase shall not exceed more than 25mm greater than the widest wheel offered by the vehicle manafacturer for that model.
(For a 60 series i believe that means 8 inch max rims. correct me if i'm wrong.)

Rim diameter may be increased or decreased, but the overall diameter of the wheel and tyre combined must not be more than 15mm greater or less than 15mm smaller than the largest or smallest wheel and tyre combination offered by the vehicle manafacturer for that model.

60 series only came out with 205R16 and 7.50R16. That gives you a maximun diameter just less than 33's. Sorry bud you're already illegal if you're in vic!
