Aircon Compressor

Well I got my airconditioning checked finaly and have found out that gas is leaking out of the seals on the compressor which means the compressor needs replacing

I spoke to the local auto one and they carn't get one and the repco store wants $820

Has anyone had to replace there aircon compressor and what sort of money should I pay for one

you cant just replace the seals?? might be a easier and cheaper option

What seals are you talking about James? The ones on the refrigerant lines- or something internal?

Not sure what seal or seals are gone but the mechanic at work said it would be easier and cheaper to just replace the compressor.

He did say where the gas is coming out it's getting blown back in or something.

I have emailed jayair and hopefuly will get prices next week.

Not real keen on buying parts through wreckers. Wouldn't know if the compressor is any good or not.

Just my 2 cents

BTW I rang a dealer who sells Daihatsu parts and they can get a new compressor from japan for $620. Better then the gold plated one from repco

I know my compressor has got some sort of speed related signal output that is fed up to an electronic control module above the glovebox. So possibly a different compressor would need other electrcial work for it to function?

try diahatsu wreckers at archer field bris as thats all his does and he has wrecked 3 rozas in the last month

Second hand ones - be aware there are a number of DIFFERENT aircon compressors on daihatsus.

Take your old one with you to the wreckers to compare them side by side!

The feroza and charade compressors are usually different, and different years of ferozas use differing compressors. There are different pulley/electric clutch combos too since some daihatsus use different width ribbed belts. I had to swap both the clutch and the pulleys over from my old one to the replacement one to use the original fan belt.

My 1992 model feroza has a 'slip' sensor on the electric clutch - this feeds to the electronic module in the dashboard that activates the idle circuit switch and prevents the motor from stalling with the aircon on when the motor is idling.

I had to replace my compressor, and could not find a second hand one with the slip sensor. The slip sensor is a small circular "plug" at the front of the compressor, near the electric clutch but on the body of the compressor with an electircal lead coming out of it. After 5 trips to the only daihatsu wrecker here in Perth I finally came away with one that was otherwise identical and had the same inlet/outlet hose size and configuration, and after some juggling around, the auto electician was able to bypass the idle circuitry and make it work. Did have to up the idle speed though since as soon as the aircon is on, idle drops by approx 250rpm. Compressor cost? $200. Then add the cost of regassing the aircon unit,($180) replacing the receiver/dryer cartridge ($60-$100) and it starts to add up. Can get a warranty on the work with most aircon guys which is worth it - it usually covers the cost of a regas within 3 months if something fails. As you are using an unknown second hand part, it is worth getting the warranty!

Noel, the idle up circuit is an easy fix- the idle up solenoid for the aircon hangs off the side of the inlet manifold. Just apply 12V to it whenever the compressor clutch is engaged.

DaiSuzi spares or something like it in South Aus has very good prices on.

Careful when dealing with them. I know of one person who bought a dud engine off them from interstate and had no end of trouble getting it replaced.

I've also found their prices never to be cheap eg. last time I went in there paid I $25 for a Applause thermo fan switch. I recently bought a brand new Tridon replacement after it failed for $33.
