Thought I would mention that Supercheap are selling awnings to fit on the side of the car for $99.
I will post a review on this topic after I try mine out up at Fraser at the end of the month.
They seem to be pretty good but if you want to leave it on the car for sometime it might be an idea to get a zipper type long bag for it. At the moment it comes with a bag but cannot be rolled out until the bag is removed, which should be OK for occasional trips.

I was about to make some sort of awning but for $99 I will try this one.

The ARB ones are very well made and convienient but start at $600! They are also too big for my shorty.

try it out on the side of your car before you go... Make sure its all there AND works.
I bought a tent from Rays Outdoors once that came with no poles or ropes.. Called Rays, they didnt give a fuck, come pick em up if you like...
Lucky my 4yr old hassled me to try it before we headed to South Aussie.... I would have been happy to be 1200klms from home with no means of sleeping comfortably for days.

here's my home made one. one of the first modifications i made to the car a couple of years ago. heavy duty pvc which is hemmed all round. One edge has nylon rope sewn in and an aluminium rail is screwed into the rack for the rope to slide into. Couple of half hitches either end and thats it. The adjustable poles roll into it. I also have velcro on the end if I feel the need to extend it out even more.

I am still working on my ideal awning. Using a 3mx4m tarp and spreader bars off the back. This makes getting to the back easy and shaded - a side awning is not what I want.
Thinking how to make it as simple and easy to put up as possible, and have all the bits contained in a rollup package on the roofrack.
I find here in Qld a side awning is not big enough for shade on the beach.
Also may be scoring some secondhand sailcloth soon which is nice and light.
I am embarressed to put it on the car.

I just used a silver tarp some adjustable legs and a sailcloth mounting strip. With the strip you put the edge of the tarp in and then insert the v piece of plastic it comes with into the slot on top of the tarp and it holds it in place nice and tight. All of this is attached to my roof ack. i just roll it all up, poles and all and it is nice and neat out of the way.

Had a steel canopy on my old clunker. Ran sailtrack on the back and down both sides so I could stretch it out either side (riveted on and sealed with goop... make sure you rivet this on good and proper as the tarps can catch a lot of wind which pulls against the tracks).
Got an upholsterer near work to sew up some heavier grade canvass and they stitched a rope in on the side that slides into the track. Some poles and a few pegs and ropes..... 3m of shade around 2 sides of the vehicle for around the $190. My only drama was occassionally rubbing up against trees and closing the sailtrack up slightly. Made it harder to slide the rope through.

Go to your local Spotlight store, get the outdoor retractable awning. I bought two to mount on my roof racks both sides and they cost $55 each. You can get them in all sort of sizes - Mine is 180cm wide and 240 cm long. Haven't installed it but trying to workout how to install it and make a zipper bag for it

I'm just brainstorming here, as i've never had an awning or thought about it before....
But what about a large window blind roller? Should be able to get them cheap, in any size, just an old blind.
I mean, take the oiginal blind off, and get a canvas or tarp replacement. Then you have an awning that pulls out easily to any length, and retracts on it's own. For appearance sakes you could just put it in a pvc pipe with a slit or something?

I suppose everyone has different needs.
With a SWB 4WD I need shade out the back to cover the rear doors, fridge and have access to the rear, especially on the beach.
No doubt I will come up with something eventually.
Once you get a good, fast, compact awning you use it heaps, and wonder what you would do without one.
