New GU UTE

Post by bigpilchard »

Hey fellas I just picked my new gu 4.2 td ute up and I am not sure if I need to run it in.Nissan never mentioned anything.Any ideas.
I spoke to some that say drive it normal ,some say dont be shy with the right pedal. But my instincs are run it in like other engines I have never owned a diesel before so any tips would be great.I will call Nissan but thought I would gather some of your opinions anyway.
Thanks Marty

Also anyone know how water tight the cab chasis are? With all this rain I might take it through some creeks but dont want to find out the hard way since its only done 800kms

IMHO, having run a lot of truck engines in would be don't be afraid to have a heavy right foot, but keep the revs down below 3k, maybe 2800 max and make it work through the rev range and keep it on boost. Make it work from day one and you will find it better from my experience. I have had brand new trucks that have been driven 800+k's bob tail (no load) to be delivered brand new and they've felt a bit gutless for a while until they worked hard for a few weeks, on the other hand I have had another truck that was delivered without being driven and its first kays straight up were pulling a loaded B-double and the difference was incredible, the head mechanic at the trucking company agreed anyway.
Thats purely my opinion from my experiences, nothing scientific.

with my 4.2 i just didnt take it over 3000 much for the first 5000 kms...

But after first 5000 i'd had the 3" exhaust and boost upto 14psi

I don't know about the 4.2's, but you hear a lot of people say - you don't need to run in new engines, more often talking about petrols. Yet most write ups you read, say don't expect full performance out of your diesel until at least 15 - 20k when its only just starting to be run in, and with the 4.2 being based on an older motor, I would be running it in.
I outlayed 45k on a navara, and didn't want to do the wrong thing, so I ran it in accordingly, although some people at nissan said you should, some people at nissan said, just drive it.
I felt it open up over a few km, and I dont' think it really was run in fully untill around 25k. It just ticked over 33k now.
And as for water seal on the cab, I wouldn't worry about it, unless its fully submergered.

The engines are "bedded in" at the factory.

Drive it now the same way as you will drive it later.
If you want it to rev later then rev it now.

I took mine to Robe when new and flogged it on the beach and in the dunes. I told the Serv. Dept. bloke what I was going to do and his only concern was that I mix the gears and revs up on the 400km drive from Adelaide to Robe.

I hit the beach with less than 500km on the odo. :D
