GQ engine.

Post by RUFF GQ »

Does anybody know roughly how much for a 4.2 Turbo diesel complete engine and turbo ready to bolt in and go?
or what are your thoughts?
my car has about 270 000k's on it and in need of turbo.
Do i
1. bolt turbo on and go from there?
2. get new engine and turbo and bolt in?

and whats a good turbo kit to get and how much roughly?

Mate I would love to be in your shoes, I would bolt a turbo kit straight on and go for it, unfortunately mine has done nearly 500,000k's and I am bit scared to do it to mine.

Have you had any dramas with the motor? What makes you think you might need a new one?

Theres people off here who have put Turbos on with 400+k's on the clock and haven't had a drama.

Cheers, Paul

Yep Beretta is right .. a mate of mine put a turbo on his GQ after 400,000 kms and as a precaution he pulled it down even though it was running fine. It was bloody spotless inside .. still had hone marks in the bore so back together it went with a set of rings and bearings. Another mate put a DTS turbo on his GQ shorty Diesel and it has over 600,000 highway kms on it (never touched ... fair dinkum) ... bloody thing flew and never missed a beat.

Having said that it always comes down to a couple of things. Firstly the condition of the individual motor but if it has been looked after well and is currently running fine then no worries. Secondly what sort of tune will it be running ... eg 9-10 lb boost and running standard DTS/Safari type turbo or 14+lb boost, fuel screwed up to the max and huge hybrid turbo?

If it's all good at the moment and you are only going to run it in a sedate state of tune then I say go for it .. both you Ruff GQ and Baretta

Cool, thanks for that mate, I'm of two minds about it myself, not having the cash right now makes it an easy decision too. Mine has never had a spanner on the motor, oil changes every 5k odd and it has never missed a beat, so there's nothing to suggest it couldn't handle it I guess.

this is what I would do - if I was unfortunate (or fortunate) enough to need a rebuild.
