Put a deposit on a Feroza (first 4wd)

Hi Everyone

I have just put a deposit on my first ever 4wd. I have chosen to get a Feroza. Like the look, and small capacity motor. (cheap to run) I hope..

Are there any things I should look out for. The car has done 160,000 km. There are no funny noises coming from anywhere.
After reading some of the other discussion threads I am getting a bit nervous about hunting for parts and reliability.

Can anyone give me any info on good wreckers around Melbourne just in case anything goes wrong?

I need the car for camping trips.
I don’t think I will be doing anything to extreme in the off road sense.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

G'day and welcome to the forum.

Keep an eye on the oil. If it's dirty and black, then keep an ear out for pinging around 3500 rpm. Sounds like a funny rattling noise. Also watch for oil consumption, as this can indicate that the previous owner has allowed the engine to ping away, which eventually will kill it.

Where are you located?


You should find plenty of help here with info, especially if (read WHEN ) you decide to start modding her.

What year is it? I'm guessing by the amount of km's it's a later model widetrack?

92 EL will be a Narrowtrack, I reckon they look better than the Widetrack with lift, tyres, etc.

I'd go MUDDIES rather than A/Ts, you'll find they're HEAPS better on and off road, and not really any more expensive. You can easily fit 30x9.5 R15 on stock rims, but will need to do a little bit of work on suspension (ie a bit of a lift) to avoid rubbing. If you're spending the $, I wouldn't waste it on anything smaller.

Suspension lift can be done for real cheap, just wind up the front torsion bars, and you can fit springs from other vehicles on the rear..... for as little as $25.00 from a wrecker.

If you want to go larger than 30" tyres, then you'll need wider wheels (15x7) and prolly need to do a bodylift.

tyre size?? standard rim.. i have fitted 30 x 9.5 wrangler mtr on with out any mod to it.. stock feroze... no problems at all..

Anything in MTR's is good for offroad, just look for the most aggressive tread (big, deep lugs), on road a softer compund tyre will give better handling/grip but hard compund will wear alot slower(ask tyre dealer for comparison between brands). I'm considering GT Radial Saveros cause they'r cheap, ~$180 for 31's IIRC, with an aggressive looking pattern. Or go simex centipedes if u have the cash and dont mind a 'bit' of road noise (like a light aircraft landing )

The wrangler MTRs are a good 'all round tyre' as they are supposed to be relativly quiet on the tar, but good on rock and capale in mud. Cant comment on the BFGs, dont know anyone who has them personally, xcept I have BFG A/T's and they'r crap on and offroad, but I got em for free so their the best tyres in the world ATM

If you go offroad at all GET MT/Rs! You will be disappointed spending the same amount of money on BFG A/T and having limited offroad ability... My bro in law bought some BFG A/T 6 months ago for his rodeo, and he is now thinking of changing his tyres as they are not real crash hot offroad.

The Goodyear MT/R are unbeleivable on wet roads, dry roads, in the bush, on the beach, EVERYWHERE!!
If you go 4x4ing like once a year I'd recommend BFG but if you go any more often go for the MT/Rs for sure!
I bought mine and could not be happier The perform better than i expected and they look shit hot too!
Go look at them in the shop and you wont turn back!

Checked some prices on the tyres. The BFG are a rip off they want $245 each. So I ordered The goodyear MTR 235/75/15. They cost $210 each.

They will be on Friday I pick up the car pon Thursday night. Can't wait for this weekend.

What's the most sensible option in giving the car a bit of a lift. Suspension of body. I have $500 left. Any ideas.
