gq operating temperature

Post by mudmav »

hey guys i have an 89 swb maverick carby that i have a hesitation problem with. It splutters a little when you first put the boot in, i have been reading all the posts about gq running temperatures and a looking for a second opinion. I replaced my radiattor about 2 months ago with a brand new standard unit and ever since i sit at about 1/8th on the gauge, i think this is to cold. i am thinking of getting a genuine nisssan thermostat as i dont no what is in it atm. So point is, i beleive that i may not be burning my fuel properly due to running to cold and hence the hestitation. What do you guys think am i an idiot or on the right track
thanks in advance

Get a decent temp gauge.
go with a VDO Gauge with 10 degree increments and see what that reads...
Have you spoken to the radiator place see what they have to say?

Hi mudmav,
Did this problem happen at the same time as your radiator replacement? It's unlikely that the engine would run cold enough to produce hesitation symptoms.

Do you notice misfiring when you sink the boot? i.e. does it splutter and cough under acceleration or is it just a delayed reaction?

If the latter I would suspect the accel pump (the part in the carb that pumps an extra squirt of fuel in when you actuate the throttle linkage - to give you that extra "kick", which generates vacuum, which in turn sucks more fuel in) may have a problem - a carb overhaul is the go

If spluttering is the case - check for vacuum leaks, plugs leads, distributor etc.
If it's worth doing - it's worth doing to excess ...

gas or petrol? I had a similar problem that the hot weather we had a few weeks ago agravated on both gas and petrol

i rebuilt the carb to find the plunger was nearly no more, the float was only half there and the jets were badly clogged, to top it off i had no seals left cause of the gas (or maybe cause its nearly 20 yrs old)

Cheers

hey guys ill answer all the questions at once

it got worse after the new radiator (running cooler on the gauge)
it hesitates but only when you first accelerate once its above 1800rpm drives great.
had the carby done 2 months ago full rebuild

I would suspect the carby rebuild over the radiator as a cause for hesitation. Might have forgotten to connect / check / adjust the accel pump?

Is it on Gas?

I had a similar problem with mine. A slight hesitation/misfire at low revs (below 2000rpm). Replace your HT leads with a good quality set and throw in a set of spark plugs with the correct heat range to suit the Gas.
Last of all get it Dyno Tuned by someone who knows gas and how to tune it.
Also check to see if your dizzy rotor is the modified one. if not change it.

I second the carby over the radiator (if I read right, they were both replaced about the same time?).

Are you still running points? there are a lot of posts here about replacing with electronic ignition systems to get rid of flatspots, misses & hesitations.
