can anyone tell me what a duel mass flywheel is, how it works, why it works, and why its needed. This duel mass flywheel is in a GU Patrol

All it is is a flash harmonic balancer (pulley assembly hanging off the end of the crankshaft that all the drive belts run off).

Ford make dual mass dampeners to fit the later model V6 Mondeos too (like my other vehicle). Basically they are designed to compensate for engine harmonics at more than one frequency, and make the engine a lot smoother. The Ford one looks like the standard balancer with another bit stuck onto it via a rubber mount.

The dual mass dampers can make an engine last longer, or they may just be fitted to reduce NVH. They usually weigh a bit more which can also affect engine performance (more mass to spin up- similar to a heavier flywheel).

I really dont understand what your saying. but from what i think your saying it doesnet sound like we are talking about the same thing. We had out clutch done in our GU today, and we were told the Duel Mass FLywheel was shot. This is the actual flywheel that the clutch and pressure plate mount to.

the reason your is shot is that they are very difficult to machine for a new clutch. in fact it is officially impossible. my clutch guy says it will cost $200 for him to attempt (to the best of his skill) to machine your flywheel. if he succeeds, you win. if he fails, bad luck. he has about a 50% strike rate. the v6 commodore with the getrag 5 speed use a dual mass flywheel, and as murcod said, it is to minimise vibration levels. as murcod also said, apparently his mondeo has a dual mass balancer, but the principle is the same. hope this helps

well they didnt even attempt to machine it, cause supposidly they are allowed a little bit of movement and ours had heaps.

well you have just answered you own question. if the balance weight is moving more than allowed, they need to replace it. btw, how much? a v6 comm one is around $700

Yep, sorry I thought you were talking about the harmonic balancer (opposite end of the crankshaft!) must have had my eyes closed! :lol:

The principle would still be the same though.
