Hi Yes, good motor, do a bit of a search on here mate, noisy tappets seem to be the main thing.known 2 wrote:i have a mate looking at one of these it has 200 000 k's on it is the 3.5 a good motor lots of power?
How long is a piece of string, depends on many things.known 2 wrote:and how many k's will it have in it befor it dies?
Yes - Very, May bend steering idler arms if your real hard on things.known 2 wrote:is the drive line stong enough to handle serious ofroading

The NJ will be the DOHC with 153kW. Reportedly a bit tight to work on. All Pajero V6s require timing belts replaced every 100k km, which is a fairly major job. But broken belt is disastrous on the 3.5, so make sure it's done. Many people will replace water pump while they're at it. There's at least one 3.0 V6 out there with 450k km on it, and the 3.5 is the same "family."
It will turn 33s without trouble, but he may notice a difference off the line if he intends to tow anything significant with it. Depending on the width of the tyres I wouldn't guarantee he won't have minor rubbing at max articulation offroad. Different offset rims will only change where they rub. I run Nissan offset rims on my NJ, and have very little trouble.
Drivetrain on these models is close to Nissan stuff for strength. He'll have to be doing something very silly to break anything. Also like Nissans, they have excellent rear LSDs.
Biggest weakness off-road is IFS wheel travel - front diff lock fixes a lot of that. With a bit of lift (simple torsion bar crank at the front) they can get respectable clearance. The rear can be made to flex well, and that rear LSD does wonders.
Cheers,
Scott

Hi Known 2
Did you compete in the Gold Coast 4wd Club Challenge? I own the Pajero that was in the challenge, it has the same running gear as th 3.5 lt mine is running 265/75/16 or 32" without any problems. If you want any other help just let me know.
Regards Glenn

Pajero GLX 2.8td 255/85/16 BFG muds 265/75/16 BFG AT's, articulator, 2.5inch lift, ball joint flip, rear sway bar disconnect and lots of mods.
I have a pajero with a 3.5 and fitted 33 no worries without a lift, with a 2 1/2 inch lift a can clear 35" claws and have pleanty of power to get them spinning.
I run 33's daily, there is a small amount of acceleration lost but it still tows a 22ft boat wiothout any trouble.
Transfer rations are sh*t and downhills can be uncomfterble with the claws on. Reverse down a hill is ever scarier

For that price there MUST be and issue - But they beasts are almost unbreakable.

Redbook would be a good place to start - but I'm not sure I want to look...
Story follows - feel free to skip.
My insurance expires today, so I've been wading my way through the renewal. The policy itself says agreed value, and I'm happy with the $ value, but TCIS have changed the company AGAIN, so I'm filling out forms AGAIN.
Second question (straight after my name) is "Market Value." I rang TCIS and asked if it's required, for an Agreed Value policy. Dude said base vehicle is $14k, and with accessories, market value of $23k is probably about right.
I'm not gonna argue.
Cheers,
Scott
