Gawd Damn! I like these:

... I had the idea of making a set of these myself, but someone is selling these 2x front skins for $350. Could almost be worth it since carbon fibre is really exy and a pain to work with. I called a guy in Adelaide a while ago (that makes custom carbon stuff) and he said do a combination of epoxy (i think) core with the resin / carbon fibre on the outer... to reduce cost.

Has anyone else made these before, carbon or with other materials/combo's etc? I was also wondering what would be better on impact in the unfortunate case of an accident..?

what an absolute waste of money. Just buy some carbon fibre look vinyl adhesive sheet and stick it to the original door skins

Carbon fibre splinters badly when impacted, i definetly wouldnt have it in my doors.

That's one day more than me...I was hoping to drive this year but now that I'm going to be selling the swb I don't want anymore damage on it as I even managed to do some on the last trip.

My original door skins are made of fabric and besides, imitation vinyl sheeting looks crap & tacky.

I was looking for an alternative like this to making a stronger door panel as well as something that looks different. The original skins are renowned for being flimsy etc etc. So thought strength would be a good thing when your body hits it (not in an accident kinda way, just being bounced around in the zook kinda way)

So if carbon fibre splinters (and in this case its only one sheet of exterior, the core is a foam cell) then why do we have them for helmets, body armour etc etc etc for the purpose of safety equipment?

My other option was to make some door skins out of marine ply, with carbon mesh patterned laminate that I use on my sandboard decks....

I like th look of carbon fibre but wouldn't have the real stuff! When it gets a hard hit it splinters and will splinter till you get rid of them.

$350!!!!!

I wouldn't pay that for a full set of doors, let alone just for the doors trims

There's a lot of people out there who have made their own skins out of alloy, checkerplate thin plywood etc. I made mine out of some masernite and covered them in a black vinyl. Easy to make and i have these on my half and full doors too, only cost about $20 for the vinyl i think.

Most helmets and protection i sell are actually fibreglass, polycarbonite or kevlar. Ive seen a few helmets with bits of carbon fibre on them but its really just cosmetics

How about kevlar? It's strong, cheaper then carbon and is flexy like fabric until set in resin.

Carbon is good for loosing wieght. Colin McRae changed his escort dash to carbon. Orginal dash weighed 10kg, new one weighed 750grams.....

Yeah I know, I doubt he'll sell them for that... I do know how much it costs in materials & time though, if I had to do it myself. But not now, since I found its just a single layer and all the feedback about the stuff splintering etc.
My door skins do need replacing, but checkerplate is metal = bloody hot to touch in summer, plus I dont like checkerplate...

BTW I have a friend who has a full carbon mesh/ fibre road bike helmet, and on the knuckles of his gloves... Retail the helmet was very expensive but he got it cheap. It loks nice, but i guess with all the other materials out there the alternatives are just as good, and protective.

Perspex is another option you can use, it can be expensive if you don't hunt around for a good price.

theres a company we do work for called "ayres composite panels"... have a gander at their gear - im sure with enough money you could have them produce a door skin for you with their system... its alloy skin with alloy honeycomb inside... ultra strong and ultra light.

perspex itself is a brand name for a type of acrylic. you want polycarbonate, which is used on coke vending machines. try punching a coke machine. they take a lot of abuse.. 6mm is apparently bullet resistant, 10mm is definitely resistant to a .22 rifle round

Polycarbonate is an awesome creation =) apparently its very expensive to make though, and often a lower grade is made to cut costs... or so ive heard...

i also got a mental image of a news headline saying how a bunch of people around australia have been arrested for vandalism on vending machines, all with one thing in common - zuk drivers... LOL

Youve mentioned that you dont like checka plate ......but there is also propeller plate very similair but alot more bling and in 1.6 mm is light as ...... yes still hot to touch in summer ..... but for $97 you could almost make 6 door skins sell the other 4 and tadaa you have a set of door skins that made u money and cost nufin but ya own time .....

Check these out, I have just ordered a set. More sense than Carbon, better price too. The Oz dollar is stronger than ours so will offset postage.

Oh and someone mentioned getting thrown about off road, well I fitted some Crow lapbelts, best off road mod ever. I am now part of the vehicle and don't suffer the rough like I used too. Try it, you'll like it.

Thanks for the links & other ideas.... I'll resign my carbon fetish & look to plastics me thinks as I have plenty of contacts for that kinda stuff

- Imagine clear perspex door skins... you could see the rain dripping inside your panels !

I still don't like the idea of any kind of metal, especially branding my arms with checkerplate design on hot summer days, its not my idea of practicality
