Swivel bearings - shims

Post by bogged »

any tips for re-shimming these? going to change mine as right one appears to be a bit fubar.

little concerned with the re-shimming of these, if they are hard to get sorted, where to get shims etc.

They are a standard size shim. Nissan have replacements - not real expensive.

We did ours a while ago and you can make your own shim - go to repco and get a poack of shim sheets and then trace one of the old ones over the top - cut out with a sharp knife. Easy

have just done one side of mine and its not that hard. Shims vary in price from a few bucks each to something like $16 each for the thickest ones. I bought about 4 or 5 pairs of the thinest sizes and came out with change of $30. Did think about cutting em out but got worried about corrosion with different metals. Also bought orings for the caps cos when i pulled em there wasnt any in the grooves, soon found out why, couldnt get em in. may be put gasket goo on em instaed? one pice of advice I took and used was to set turning effort at high end cos the bearings will settle back in and it helps with the shakes.

Bruce,

dont forget to get some of the new seals that go underneath the bearing races. ITs almost impossible to put knock the old ones out without destroying them. You need to remove them when installing new bearing races..
