12v lighter plug....or is it a 24v???? help!!!

hi there a have 1987 nissan mq the last year of the mq i believe. and i have been told that the ciggarite lighter plug is a 12v but it has a lighter thing in it that says 24v but when you press it it barly warms up so does this indicate it really is a 12v. i only want to run a stereo!!! help i have to whistle to myself as i drive!!!! how sad!!!

should be 12volt. My old 80 model was 24 volt system but the lighter was 12volt.

is an 87 model a 24 volt system anyway?

depends, mine says 24v but its 12v, see if you can find an aftermarket transformer somewhere, possible in teh engine bay or behind the dash

Mine is a 1980 MQ Diesel with 24v setup factory, but the cig lighter is 12v (also factory). Buy urself a cheap $8 multimeter from Dick Smith and check it. You'll use it again anyway.

pull a bulb out of it and if it has 24v on it its a 24 but all cig lighters are 12v no matter what the 24v is converted down in the factory loom some where

My Safari lighter was 24v

I now run a small converter for the cig. socket alone so it has enough juice to run a fridge, large spotty etc

hi i checked it today with my freinds voltmeter its 24v arrrrrr!

ive got a 12v transformer but dont know how to fit it

its only got three wires comming out of it... how does that work? any one got a wiring diagram for a "redarc" transfromer? that i can understand hahahaha

its also got a 240v power box in it

Sorry, meant the redarc converter, someone may have the same setup. You should have a 24v input side, and 12v output side. Thats unless all wires come from the one spot, so if they aren't marked, you will have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. Most have built in protection for accidently reversing the input/output.

I have 3 converters, all have a 3 wire setup, and all are wired the same.

24v input: Red
12v output: Yellow
Earth: Black

ohhhh the only thing that i dont reliase is how you get 2 wires + an - into 1 wire "24v input" and how you turn 1 wire "12v output" into two wires to run something eg a spotty

If you are running this off your standard cig. lighter, do what I did. All you do is get rid of the 24v feed into the back, leave the earth connected, and connect your new 12v up to where the 24v used to be, but cover the old 24v wire end up so it can't short out. (hope that makes sense).

Remember, to run a "2 wire" item such as a spotlight is easy, 12v+ from the converter, and its own earth (-) straight to the chassis etc.

The MQ lighter should be 12 volts as is the radio connections in the pod. They feed from the same source which is through a factory relay that switches on at the accessory stage and feeds off the drivers side battery which is 12 volts.
