Hello my name is Steven , im kazza's husband.

im buying a landcruiser 80 series 1991 4.0l auto.
I was wondering if they had any inherent problems i should look out for.
or any other things that you could tell to look out for.
the one im interested in has 260000ks and he's aking $13000 for it
would you consider that to be a fair price.
it looks in very good condition. well looked after.

if it's the 4l petrol he's asking way to much for it u could find a newer model with the 4.5l petrol (much better motor) for that amount. try shoping around a bit more mate u might even find a diesel for 13k with less kay's.

what about a 1994 80series 4.5l auto with 210000ks 14990 fully onroad no more extra cost.
or would you say keep an eye open for a diesel from the same year .

that sounds like a better deal, as for diesel/ petrol it depends what u want the petrol is a strong performer with heaps of grunt but drinks heeps like 17-20l per 100k and the diesel is a real slug plenty of low down torque and economical, sort of. well my diesel 80 takes about 28 secs to get to 100kph but it's a good motor and will go forever.

in the end it's down to what u want to use it for, wether u choose petrol or diesel. but the one u just mentioned sounds like a fair deal

also mate are you buying from a dealer or private seller cos you can get them much cheaper privetly, check out www.carsales.com
or www.carpoint.com they usualy have some good deals might find one thats allready kitted out.

Cheers for the advice mate.

Do you know if theres a lot of differences between a manual and an auto.
i like manuals but people have told me the autos are better off road.
can i believe tales like this or shall i just chuck them in the rubbish bin.
will it all come down to what you feel comfy with?

prety much what your comfortable with but auto's are easyer to drive offroad and they don't stall but i dun know much about cruiser auto's so it's totaly ur preferance but the manual is more fun.

Steven, I've had both a 4.0lt auto in a 60series and now a 4.5lt in a 80 series and both have been very good vehicles. Of course I prefer the 80series for the extra power and comfort but both have been very good on and off road. Auto's are alot easier to drive offroad as you don't have to worry about gear changes (particulary on steep hill climbs and river crossings). If you can, try to hang out for a 4.5lt of at least a 1993 to 1994 model or even better still, a 1995 or later. 1995 was the year for the updated interior and a engine tune up. Good Luck ;)

A manual will give better control on a decent (it wont run away on you) unlike an auto. The manual gives more back pressure and slows the car down while the auto wont. I personally prefer diesel motors to petrol but each to their own. The auto will be lazier(easier isnt the right word) to drive off road but the manual will give you more control.

Definetly stay away from the 4.0 its a dog box, my 4Runner 2.8 can out run one, so if petrol was your choice go the 4.5 and thats not a bad price you have got up there, or go a diesel.

Mine is a 96 gxl full electric 4.5 auto with 220000 on the clock and paid 9k for it

I'd get a auto, if i where to get another 80. You can get crawler gears for them now if your worried about steep decents.

The argument of runaway on a down hill decent is not really a valid one these days. The newer autos have a pretty good low range first gear in comparison with a manual (we have compared 4.5lt auto vs manual in the Otways ranges). Personally I have used autos in the Otways, Vic high county and even at Arkaroola on some of their back tracks with no problems. Nearly put myself through the windscreen when I used low first for the first time!
