EGR - What the!!!!!

Post by sambo2222 »

A mate has said that I should have the EGR blocked off on my hilux 3L. I know they are a exhaust gas recirc valve but what is the reason for recircing hot dirty exhaust gas back into the inlet side of your engine. Don't realy make sense. Secondly is the NA 2.8l diesel fitted with them or are they only a turbo thing. Had a quick look just then with torch and couldn't see jack!!!The whole thing sound sus.

HMMM.. not sure about the fitment of them on 2.8L.
but now for a chemistry lesson.
The purpose of an EGR valve is to reduce the emission of nitrous oxides from the exaust by reducing the peak combustin temperatures.
Here's the Chemistry bit... Under high engine loads the peak combustion temperature increases to a point where oxygen and nitrogen are forced to combine which creates NOx (nitrous oxides) a poisonous gas. In order to curve this the peak combustion temp needs to be lowered. To lower the combustion temp an inert gas is needed during the combustion process This is done by feeding a controlled amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the combustion chamber. Where's the best place to find CO2 in a motor vehicle? in the exhaust gases.
So at the expense of a little power and a little economy the EGR valve is fitted to keep the ozone layer and our lungs a little happier.
There you go children, hope you understand a little better now. Schools over!

thanks for that ruffy. sort of makes sense. I am pretty sure the 3L is not fitted with one. Had a good look today in the daylight and definitely not there. Spot on Bogan. Goes to prove if you ask the question there is always someone out there that knows. Hence forums like this one. Thanks again for the lesson ruffy
