Yesterday coolant spewed out the overflow bottle and now there is steam
coming out the exaust at idle..... Ive taken the thermo out, but im worried to take it out for a test run cos of the wight smoke. anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like it could be a head gasket maybe...

have you checked the oil?...is it a whitish colour?

Take your radiator cap off and start it up, just let it sit and idle...if there are air bubbles coming up then I would definately say its your head gasket.

I have also heard its not the wisest thing to run a diesel without the thermostat...but dont know how true that is.

Test the Thermastat.
Removing it will cause the water to circulate without having a chnace to cool down and overheat the engine.

Turns out to be a welch plug thats sprung a leak, the small ones on the surface of the head, piston went down sucked water... piston comes up and burns with fuel to form steam..... ;)

The head gasket is gone as there will be no welsh plugs in the combustion chamber you will need to do all the welsh plugs when the head is removed..
