Coil or leaf????
Coil or leaf????
Hi i own a GQ but im thinkin of getting rid of it and getting a zook, (too much money tied into the GQ wanna get a cheap bush pig!)
I have seen a few that have been modded and not modded coil and leaf but havent the faintest idea what i should get.
What i wanna know is people's opinions on the coil sprung sierra verses the leaf sprung.
Im keen to get it pretty high and do all the usuall mods if theyre not done but i dont want it to turn into a money pit!
Any advice would be great!!

May i ask why?Im keen to get it pretty high
Leaves will be cheaper to do than coils as you are modifying the equipment already there. Coils means fabricating a completely new suspension system. which inturn costs more.
The best way is to work out what size tyres you want to run and build the car around that.
Maybe post up some info on what type of terrain you want to drive, weather its a daily driver as well, what your budget is etc etc and work from there.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
with gears it will do fine...TinyGQ wrote:i run 35's on my GQ but im not sure how the 1.3 will take decent sized rubber? id like to get it up to 35's but at least 33's.
What do the little motors go spining the rubber, does the crawler gears help it at all??
with anything bigger than 31's normaly you will get alot of breakage's
lux diffs are fairly cheap to put under

Cheers james, i wont lie i want my rig to go well but i also like the wank value! I love litle kids going oowww its a monster truck, obviously the sierra wont have that affect but i just like the look of the trucks being higher, not stupid hights but lifted. I love driving my lifted GQ around and ive only had a couple of scary moments off road lol!!sierrajim wrote:May i ask why?Im keen to get it pretty high

It will be a daily driver for 6 months then after that it will spend most of its time in the garage.
People say i have too much lift for the tyres i run on the GQ but i already scrape the top of the wheel arch under full flex, i have no problems having my car a lil too high, i mean im not going to be going in any comps or anything, there isnt much of that in SA as far as i know.

Oh yea i have been noticing thats a fairly common practice, ill look into that too, looks like leaf is the way!MADZUKI wrote:with gears it will do fine...TinyGQ wrote:i run 35's on my GQ but im not sure how the 1.3 will take decent sized rubber? id like to get it up to 35's but at least 33's.

Do you have to get adj panhard rods and stuff when you lift a coily sierra?

the biggest down fall with the coil is that it runs a coil over shock
the coil sits on a seat which is welded to the coil
you can do two inch with littlte problem but if you want 35's you need to do some seirous mods to the front and a body lift.
new coil mounts on the diff seperate shocks you will also need to get the kingpin agles back to normal or it tracks like a bastard (trust me) also you will need to look at how the trailing arms are mounted to the diff as if you were to use caster plates the rear steering arm will hit on the arms. And you can't get a front arb air locker for these off the shelf...

I am possibly wrong on some things but i have been looking into this for a while now.
I WANT MORE FLEX

Is it worth converting a leaf sprung sierra to coil? Im doing some suspension mods anyway and am wondering if its worth it, they wont be a coil sprung shock setup, but separate spring and shock combo.
Mainly im thinking of doing it as my leaf sprung rides like shit and it will also give me better approach and departure angles, since i was gonna move the axles forward and back respectively too.

id say go the coil sierra..
as everyone has said they are harder to get working, but they are better (my opinion only) than a leaf setup..
i have spent massive amounts on mine, but after doing that if you take away the things that didnt work and the things i didnt need i dont think it would be any more expensive compaired to a highly moded leaf sprung sierra.

cheers for that guys, i wasnt aware of the coil setup, thought it may be similar to the GQ, even though customising a coily would be better i think ill get a leaf sprung one, hopefully with gears in it cause thats where i get really lost 4.1 this 5.1 that lol!! this is just gonna be a shitty bush basher there isnt enough extreme stuff down here a close range to spend too much cash!!mud4b wrote:id say go the coil sierra..
