Hi all,
I have a question which I'm tring to get myself an answer from two weeks ago:
In my comp car I've installed coil-overs. The shocks I used are Bilstein (made for a big truck, front suspension), travel 12", 2 1/2" diameter, about 3/4" shaft.
The springs are 2 1/2" diameter.
I've installed them as follows: cutting off the upper plate of the OEM spring, passing through the luggage area, welding a new fixing bars from the chassis to 300 mm upper into the car.
The lower fixing was made welding onto the existing OME springs plates.
The coil-overs has ball-joints on both ends, with more then 30 degrees angles...
During a special stage of the TAT 2003, my rear suspension became apart...the both rear shock absorber' shaft broken!!
Since then I'm tring to figure out WHY it happens...
Before to weld everything I rotate the axle to see if something is touching...nothing wrong!!
The only one reazon looks to me that the shaft war not big enough...but even soo, the shock absorber works in only two directions...no presure on the midle of the shafts, isn't?!?
Maybe one of you can "show me the light"!!;-))
Many thanks, Gabriel
PS: here you have some pics of the coil-overs I made...

were the breaks straight or did it look like the shafts had bent first before breaking? maybe 30 degrees is not enough
usually the shocks only break if they top out or bottom out.

it looks very much like they bent first...then broken from the midle of the shaft.
Anyway, the shocks didn't get to the max travel (limited flex with straps..)
