2H Blue smoke on cold startup
Hey guys, my 2H has done about 400k kms, I have not long bought it, ive noticed when I start it up it blows blue smoke, only on the first start in the morning, it also sounds like its missing, runs real rough, the colder the morning the longer it blows the blue smoke and runs rough, usually only lasts about 5 seconds, (this is only my weekend, offroad bashing beast, I dont drive it normally during the week) but this morning (I was taking it for a wheel alignment and I noticed the smoke lasted about 20 seconds as it was a bit cold outside and the first time I have started it this early in the morning. I have recently replaced the glow plugs, and I will check them out again. It doesnt really blow any noticable smoke once its warm, few mates we go out with 4wd'in has said even up the big hills when im working Low 1st at high revs its not blowing any smoke either. Just wondering what it could possibly be, and if its an early sign on stuffed engine, I did put a litre of morreys oil additive in last oil change as someone suggested this is good for the engine, im not sure if that was a good idea or not. Im also using flash lube additive in the fuel.
Any help would be great. Sorry its a bit of a long winded question.
Cheers

my first guess would be valve stem seals with the oil sitting overnight its very possible for it to seep past then stop when u start to run the engine, the other possibility is also the rings, you probable know u have 3 rings on each piston so if one of them average it has a chance to get past on start up before the rings bed in agains the cylinder wall

If it is only on cold start there is still the possibility of it being a glow plug fault. not necessarily the plugs them selves but maybe a connection. Make sure the bus bar (alloy bar connecting all the glow plugs together) is making good contact on all plugs. Possibly a compression fault aswell. Either way if it's only cold start then i'd be putting up with it (as i have been with my 2H 60 for some years now) as a rebuild would be an extremely expensive idea on a 2H these days if you were to do it properly. As for a Re-Ring, don't do it. You'll spend good money and you'll be disappointed.
Good luck

infact the oil additive I used was the Lucas one, here is a link to the product http://www.noelsautoparts.com.au/Lucas%20Oil.htm
Could this product be causing the rings to gum up, and it smokes until the rings free up?
I read that somewhere else in this forum (not in relation to additives, just gunned up rings), maybe running some engine flush or a half a litre of diesel in the oil for 10 - 15 minutes before my next oil change might be worth a shot, and then not using this product again. Although I had not had it long, I dont remember it being this smokey on startup, although the morning are getting colder, and I have only had this 4wd since just before christmas.
