BJ73 MWB Toyota "Question"
Hi there all
Just touching on a subject I inquired about before - but was confused with all the input (Please I dont want to offend anyone whom helped in the past but want to get it all clear before starting).
My vehcile is a BJ73 MWB 1985 - 3b diesel (5 speed)
Technical Question ;
Will a 2h diesel fit up to the bellhousing/gearbox of this vehicle.
If not what is involved with doing so?
My reason I have a spare 2h diesel engine complette (in good condition) - the old 3b is terminal and canot justify paying between $2-$5000 for another second hand engine (more than the vehcile is worth). I use the vehicle for alot of towing and the additonal power would also be great.

hi wayne.... you need the 2h bellhousing... and the input shaft from a 2h/3f 5 speed box... then you pull the box down and change the input shafts over... that seems to be the general consensus to do the swap... if your going to that hassel id go the 1hz routeellard wrote:Hi there all

yes that is correct, you need to use the 2H bellhousing and the 2H/2F input shaft, plus the engine mounts will need to be moved. since you need to completely disassemble the gearbox to fit the new input shaft, and the input shaft from toyota is $$$, AND you need to more or less completely disassemble the transfer case to get the gearbox apart, it is cheaper and easier if you can swap your gearbox and transfer for the correct one at a wrecker or privately. dismantling the gearbox is a world of hurt if you're not already proficient and tooled up for that sort of job.

unfortunately the 4th gear clutch dog which is directly behind the input gear is a larger diamter than the input gear so it is not possible to withdraw the input shaft from the gearbox simply by removing the front cover and selectors - you need to drop the cluster gear to get the input shaft out.Ruffy wrote:I could be (read are most probably) incorrect, but i thought you could remove the input shaft out the front by removing the front snout and the top of the box?
I vaguely remember doing an input shaft bearing this way??? maybe just the bearing comes out that way???
it might be possible to change the input bearing without pulling the whole box down.

many thanks for your respones - at this stage I will stick to locating a 3b or 13bt - as we need the vehcile on the road again ASAP.
I had a post in the wanted section and have had three offers of engines - and persueing this option.

Well I have taken on board all the advice and the out come is:
I have purchased a second hand written of 60 series wagon (rear end smash). After taking out the engine & gearbox sold the remaining body to a local crash shop (therfore the engine a gearbox cost me nothing)
I have started to fit the 2h diesel with 5 speed (overdrive). I will give you all a written report apon complettion.
I have contacted our transport people and there is not any problems regarding rego - just required to get our local plod (Police) to check the engine number when completted.

When talking to our motor rego inspection division (SA) they informed me these vehicles came out with 2h motors within the 75 series (simualar chassis) and all they wanted was for local Police officer to inspect the engine no.

After bench testing the 1hz - it requires a rebuild but I need the vehicle back on the road ASAP therfore I will put in the 2h. I will send you a private message as I am a little confused about one issue after talking to our toyota expert.
