Its the best thing you can do to the Hilux

I have fitted a VR engine into my 85 4 runner
I have used the R150 manual [not a granny auto] fitted a 30% overdrive
engine does 2200 RPM at 110 kmh in 5th through 4.556 diffs and 33x12.5 tyres
I also made a adaptor to fit the gear drive transfer case onto it [now dual transfer cases]
I also made fit a 11 blade viscous coupled fan onto the Commodore engine
63 litres if fuel around 450 KM
You need power steering of a live axle 4runner
The 88 surf is ok if you are doing a crossover steering

Loved my Hilux with V6. Was a bit thirstier than I had hoped. Drove like they should have been made to. Power steer is highly recommended.
