GQ REAR WHEEL BEARING REMOVAL (Who's done it?)

I am currently changing over from drum rear end in my Shorty to disc rear end. I have bought a disc diff housing and axles to match blah blah etc... but the wheel bearings have a little bit of grit and crap in them from laying around at the wreckers so while they are out of the car i want to clean, check and repack with grease before installing. I have undone the large nut on the inner bearing side of the axle and removed, but after alot of bashing of hammers and swearing i cant seem to budge the axle or the inner bearing from its housing. I noticed that the inside bearing that can be easily seen once the nut is removed has a plastic roller cage and not a steel one. Anyway does anyone know how to get them out??

they're a press fit bearing

find a mate with a decent press, or take it to a mechanic to do it

yeah they're a real pain in the arse to do, the way i've done em is pretty brutal, ya gotta get a die grinder in between the inner race and outter race and grind them out a bit and start digging out the bearings. once you get all them out you can get the whole outter housing bit off. then to get inner race off start grinding into it with a bench grinder till its not very thick then hit it where you've been grinding it with a nice big cold chisel and hammer, i recomend putting a rag around the chisel cause if a bit flies off it'll slice you open. then the old bearings off!!!

but yes you'll need like a 5 tonne press to put it all back together

That would make sense to why the bearing cage is plastic, making it easier to get the bearings out of the race.... not sure if i want to pull the damn thing apart now though. So if the inner is a press fit; it would be very damn hard to set the bearing pre-load when pressing bearing back on axle even though the nut can be used to push it home. What if you go to tight??? Cant just back off the nut !! #@

Well thats not what i found... I was warned that it would be very tight and so expecting it to be so. But I nearly face planted the work bench in my shed when it turned pretty easy and i had put a fair bit of muscle into it antisipating it to be bloody tight :/ ????

Warming the inner bearing helps a lot when pressing out the bearings also.
My press eventually pressed out the axle, but it almost expired doing so....

Just because the nut wasn't massively tight .. Why does that mean it is fcuked? explain!!

I presume that if it is meant to be done up that tight that there is a spacer of some sort between the two bearing inners, otherwise the preload would be huge??

I put a small nick in mine with the oxy and pressed it out. No dramas. 30t press though.
