Vit drum brake problem

its been a couple of days now, and i cant seem to find what the problem is.

in the drum brake set up, you have two shoes, either side, and then there is the wheel cylinder, top middle, and then there are 3 springs that hold things together.

now, the thing that i cant make to work properly, is the piece that goes under the wheel cylinder, and between the two brake shoes above the axle. this piece also has the self adjuster mechanism on it.

problem is, it keeps falling out.

no matter how i fit it up, and no matter how tight it is, or if the hand brake is on or off, it will keep falling out. i've already smashed a wheel cylinder because its fallen out.

and the back tyres dont even stop when i push the brake pedal. going forwards, you c an hear the piece jit on the inside of the drum as the drum spins, and when the drum spins backwards, the shoes catch, and jam, and it falls out again.


are my springs gone? will i need new ones? what could i be missing? wat could be the problem? and is this a common thing?

and are the sierra drums the same(ish) as the vit ones?

i assume u put new shoes in and u either left a spring out or i has launched into outerspace, there should be a spring that goes over the adjuster to either side of the shoe, this is what the sierras have and i presume the vits are the same, im only goin of memory so if im wrong someone correct me.

i only have 3 springs, not including the one on the 'falling off' piece with the adjuster.

one at the bottom, holding the bottom of the shoes together, one long one, side to side for the shoes, and one other one which is supposed to hold the adjuster bit to the forward shoe.

so i think all the springs are there, and its the same both sides.

and yes, there are new shoes in too.

and the shoes move a lot when changing direction, like, when wheel is turning forwards, and i try to stop it, and then when the wheel reverses, the shoes move up and down and jam, like braking, but more like breaking!

Are they the right shoes? There are a couple of variations. I found this out when I changed mine and had to get them swapped for the right ones. Do they match exactly what you took off?

no.

i have taken the adjuster piece out, and the handbrake lever (the one on the rear shoe) off and out of the drum set up. i am running with no hand brake atm.

no matter how i fit it up, the adjuster piece will always fall out, and its already smashed 2 wheel cylinders. and dont even start with the hand brake, it just pulls the drum set up all apart.

the brake shoes are the same as the old ones, and i even took them back and asked, and they said that there is only one type anyway. parn number DB1683 i think. or something like that.


i think that it might come down to the adjuster piece, which may have the 'hook' a bit worn, and not holding itself in.

i'm trying to get a hold of some from another vit, but none in wreckers here, so still looking around.

i replaced mine only about 3 months ago, i needed x-90 shoes for the back on my vit i had to take them back because they gave me the wrong ones. is it possible that the reservoir is empty and you just have no pressure holding the shoes inplace?

Don't know if this helps but i had my drums apart the other day on my sierra and took a pic of them so i know what they should look like incase i break a spring or something. Presume their probably much the same as vit ones?

is it possible for the adjuster piece to be put in upside down? (the one with big red arrow)

and the two ends, which i have circled, how are they 'hooked' into the shoes?

i remember when i took it all off, and every other time i've changed brake shows, that the adjuster piece had the adjuster on the top side, is this right?

i try not to mix left and right side up, and i dont think i have. and the wheel cylinders are full of fluid, bled both sides, and then i also did the front ones too. still the same....

Hi. Zukiny here from Singapore.

I'm venturing a guess becos I had the same experience with my Jimny rear drum brakes when I replaced the brake shoes.

Referring to the pix you posted ....the part called ''spring & rod assembly''.

If you notice , the ''other side without the adjuster''......the ''Y'' has a long & short ''tonque''.

You shud install with the ''long'' tonque facing the ''outside'' ie. you are looking at it if installed ''correctly' instead of being 'hidden' which is incorrect.

I hope this helps becos that was my mistake and when I pulled on my hand-brake the whole bloody contraption fell off...!!

maybe it was just a back-to-front day when i did the brakes.....?? who knows.
