Mad Cruiser, I know JohnZ had It fixed by Toyota, A diff laping company that does race trucks. You would think they would know what they are doing. But I am not a profesional mec so can not comment on there knowledge of the issues.

I can only comment as an outsider looking in who has watched on while it has taken place.

Therefore the problem does not lie with Toyota Landcruisers, it usually lies with the people who repaired the diffs, they could have not done something right there such as right torquing bolts sealing up etc

Sorry Mad Cruiser i have to disagree with you. poor workmanship may account for some broken diffs. but why so many for the 100s as opposed to the 80s. for some reason 80s seem to be much stronger than 100s.

The 100 is 4.3 ratio [that's 10/43 teeth] & the teeth are about 3mm thick at the top. That crown wheel is exactly the same size as 1986 hilux 2wd with 2.0 litre engine. i truly believe that is the problem. toyota are putting smaller diffs in vehicle with more powerfull engines. even the 60s has bigger diffs with much less horsepower.

Why would the diff's be getting repaired if they weren't breaking ?
Perhaps there is an inherent problem with the metallurgy of the 4.3 gear set, to hard (making the gear to brittle and subject to stress fractures) or that there is a minor issue with the standard of the housings that causes some kind of miss alignment, (bearings not being properly supported by the housing) by swapping the carrier the machining tolerances may be marginally different and the problem goes away

I think this post is getting closer to the mark. I'm guessing Toyota changed to a new supplier for their diff gears, and are about to change again.

The name they built over such a long time is in danger of being destroyed - I don't think they'll give it up without trying.

Well the toyota/nissan front diff proved itself on the week end. drove up the same hills that broke the 100s front diff before. Then took on some of the tuff truck tracks & came through intact. later reversed up a hill with bowling ball rocks & no problems. the 100 would never have done that before. I am very happy with the front diff now. can't wait to see the video footage.

Was watching a new 100s with independant front end go up a track at Morning Star near Walhalla on the weekend, lost traction, slipped back slightly and 'BANG'went the front diff. He managed to get up in the end, as he turned to the left you could hear the broken gears grinding....
