Transfer Upgrade

Post by Dee 4x4 »

Hey guys.

Well I'm loving the new Suzi and absolutely can't wait to take it out this weekend. However, in playing around with it at home on the property I've found that the L4 gear with my 30's feels quite a bit too high and I'd like reduced gearing.

I know I could try and get a 1lt transfer cause which would give me about 10%/20% reduction replacing my coily case (as from what I've heard, the coily cases have a higher L4 than the nonicoily 1.3's) but I think I'd like to go even lower as crawling is what I find most fun. I can always change up a gear anyway if it's too slow.

Just to confirm, I'd need a 1.3 (non coil) transfer case to fit calmini or rockhopper gears? This 1.3 case should install into my coily without any modifications? If I purchase gears and have them installed, there are other parts that I'll need to replace as well? I'd be looking at about $1800 for a 1.3 box, gears (S1 or 4.16:1), any bearings and installation?

Thanks for you help. I've read all the threads in the bible and they were a great help. The above is what I've come up with from reading them and I just wanted to check I had it all right.

Ps. Don't want to change the diffs as I want to keep the high range pretty much on stock with 28 -30" road tires.

Yeah mine has 30's and i agree with you it can get baway from you at times. I think the only things you can do is get the 1l box or rock hoppers and the like. Apparently the rock hopper series 3 are brilliant.

You will also need to change the flanges on the new trasfer taht you get to match your drive shafts, and i think the jack shaft needs to be changed too. Rock hopper S1 gears aer not made anymore i think, though there are similar ratio's available through other manufacturers.

Installed a Series 1 case in a mate 1.3 leafer with 30" treads and I think it is perfect gearing for those tyres.

Fixes the high range back to standard gearing and gives that nice bit extra in low range. I'm sure a lot of people will say you can't go too low with gearing but I think any lower than S1 with 30" tyres and being used as an all round offroader, Series 3 or similar would be painfully slow in most situation.

If you crawl rock only and nothing else, S3 gears would be the go.

My mate swears his Series 1s are the best mod he has done since the bigger tyres, hands down.

Series 1's retain the original high range don't they?

dee, let us know how you go with sourcing reduction gears for the coily. i want to do the same to mine hopefully by the end of the year, but need to work out roughly how much it will cost, what parts to you use etc. Im in the same circumstances as you (same tyre size, daily driver etc.) so ill be very interested to see how you go.

keep me updated

Cheers

Well I guess my options are to source a 1lt transfer case (as far as I know, one with a 4wd switch whatever that is :P ) or source a leaf 1.3 case and get S1 rockhoppers or the 4.16:1 calimni's.

Both will net me with a similar to factory high range, although the low range with the 1.3 box and gearset would be substantially lower.

Hmmm... what to do...

Are these price guesstimates close?

Reconditioned 1lt box installed for $1000?

1.3lt box with gears installed for $2000?
