is a 2.8l Hilux Diesel a free spinning engine?

Post by CJ Burns Esq »

A mate recently did a timing belt idler wheel and is worried about the valves in his engine. Some one said that the 2.8l Diesel is a free spinning engine, ie if the timing belt is not on the valves won't foul the piston tops whne the engine is rotated. Can any confirm or deny this supposition for me please?

I would ring Repco or Auto 1 or some where because in their books that tell them what timing belt fits what it sometimes says if the engine is free spinning or not.
Being a diesel there is very very little room between the pison and the head at TDC but you never know, if the cam stoped turning just at the right spot and the engine stoped soon after you might be lucky.

nope, im pretty sure they not free spinning, did the engine rotate?? if the belt is to lose then it may have skipped a tooth.

You should spin the engine a whole revolution by hand (well, ratchet) after putting the belt on if you think it may have moved! that way you will know if the engine seizes without fucking it!
