removing 4.5ltr and replacing with 4.2ltr
removing 4.5ltr and replacing with 4.2ltr
just wondering if anyone has done it before?
if i cant find a 4.2 for the right price im considering sellting for a 4.5 petrol in the meantime. and then changing it to a 4.2 turbo diesel.
just wondering whats involved..

Have you thought about looking for a 2.8 diesel.j-top paj wrote:just wondering if anyone has done it before?

I know a cheap 4.2 td is hard to find and the 2.8's are worth nothing.
So what you could do is find yourself a second hand blown 4.2 motor get it rebuilt with a turbo you can do this in stages and in the mean time just drive the 2.8 GU then book it in or do it yourself conversion. you will also need a gearbox as well even if you didnt rebuild a 4.2 you could always purchase a 4.2 factory td with a gearbox and drop that in.
At the moment i'm just helping a mate whos gone from a 2.8 to a 4.2 custom setup.
Have seen GU 2.8 with motor or gearbox issues for under 10k so you could be in luck

Re: removing 4.5ltr and replacing with 4.2ltr
The 4.5 would be a better option than the 2.8 simply as it comes with the good autobox and ratios compared to the 2.8 with the car box.j-top paj wrote:just wondering if anyone has done it before?

You would get good $ for a 4.5 motor selling it, as dudes are lookin for them over the 4.2 petrol for conversions. 2.8's apparently are a great motor for G60's but who wants one.
Mate sold his 4.5 for $22k last year (wish I would have known - would do same as your thinking).. but this was a low kms rig, you can get them for under $20k.
Spend $10-15k on the conversion and your set.. Then again, 4.2s have gone thru auctions from ex-npws for $33k.
I dont think it would be too hard really.
yeh i was thinking of the 2.8 as there are plenty of them around for cheaps, but they have the smaller driveline. the less things to change over the better.
then i would get a gq 4.2 and change the lot over motor, box, diffs etc...
from what i know they are the same??? not 100% tho.
if i could get a gq cheap enough i could rebuild everything while i have the 2.8 and then when its ready transfer the parts across.
but the thing with the 2.8 is everyone i speak to thats had one says that they are too underpowered. i need a bit of power in the meantime while im getting the other motor ready.
i want to run 35s and lift, plus all the other gear il be putting in it for touring so i think the 2.8 will shit itself before i have the 4.2 ready.

by the time you do this, you could have bought a good GU 4.2j-top paj wrote:yeh i was thinking of the 2.8 as there are plenty of them around for cheaps, but they have the smaller driveline. the less things to change over the better.

What will you do with a GQ with a 2.8 and small driveline in it? Resale would be $10.00
I'd go a 4.5, and then call Giant racing who had a TD4.2T for $7k ready to go in if I remember the message from few weeks ago... at least you could get some $ back on the 4.5 V the 2.8
im building a tourer so i want economy too.stool wrote:
Turbo a 4.5
the 4.5 without turbo drinks like a fish and when i load it up and hook up the trailer i cant imagine it getting any better.

Just for peoples intrest the RD2.8Ts are fetching around the 1500+ mark in GQ trim as they are starting to crap themselves and is cheaper to buy a running motor then to rebuild the clapped out one.
An motor importer will charge about 1500 without turbo.

true, i didnt actually think of that.
i plan on having the car for at least 5years and do a lot of touring in it.
the main trips il be doing will be the cape, fraser, kimberlys and one trip right around oz. so i think il clock up a few ks.
have also considered a Ti so the petrol will be the only option if i get one of them.

is there anything to look out for in either the 4.5 Ti or a 4.2tdi in any trim (probably ST)
ive looked at a couple but havnt had a close look at anything yet.
things like gear box problems, rust etc... any problems i should be aware of before buying.
