Looking at an XJ need some advise
A newbie to jeeps I may just be yet, I would like another RR but the missus wont let me because I wont be able to leave it alone. Sooo...
Been looking at an XJ for the missus (we are about to have a kid) and she has got herself set on the jeep. Took it for a test drive and noticed a few things I didn't like so maybe you guys can help.
A; Noticed thet the auto was noisy, sort of like a whisling sound faster she went louder she got. Now i don't know much about autos so is this normal for a jeep, is there anything to be weary of, faults etc?
B; When I put it into a corner hard the motor would die momenterily (2 second flat spot) then on again, it would take off fine as soon as it got over its hissy fit. Sounds like a fuel issue to me, is this a common problem or is there anything I should look out for?
Oh and it is a 98 model, full leather, electrics, roof display etc, is there anything else I should be aware of.

Mine has the occassional stutter around a corner but onl when it's cold and also only if the tank is on empty. Other than that it never hesitates. My auto is quiet, it will get a bit of a whine after I've been in low range all day and hit the hwy but I think it is the t-case and more of a gear meshing thing. It's normally gone after 10k's or so of driving and the gears in the t-case loosen up again.

Thanks steve that seems to make a bit of sense, come to think of it the fuel light was coming on as we went back to the yard. I also noticed the gearbox wine more after testing it in low range.
Might have to go test a few more and see where we lie. I guess the autos would be fairly easy to pick up wouldnt they?

I would suggest to drive as many XJ's as you can, there are plenty out there and the prices are coming down, so it is a real buyers market. With a couple of bucks spent on suspension and tyres (and disconnects) these can be a great offroad weapon. Heaps of power, solid axles, heaps of aftermarket stuff available.
I'm also thinking about an xj, but with the diesel. How much work is required on them to fit 33's? I live in Karratha in WA's northwest and Im just coming from a landcruiser(written off) so I'm looking for something that is just as reliable as the old 1hz, or would I be better off sticking with the cruiser?
Big money to get past 31's let alone 33'sshanegtr wrote:I'm also thinking about an xj, but with the diesel. How much work is required on them to fit 33's? Lockers or Knockers ,both will make for fun.

Doing 33's properly means a regear and a decent lift. My 31's will rub with the swaybar disconnected but a little trimming or change in front bar will fix that.shanegtr wrote:I'm also thinking about an xj, but with the diesel. I had a long chat to the guys at Hammonds (Brisbane) last week about buying an XJ turbo diesel, and they said to run away from the TD as fast as I can.shanegtr wrote:I'm also thinking about an xj, but with the diesel. According to Hammonds gurus, the TD design has a history of problems associated with it and they are very expensive to repair (much more so than the petrol 4.0 litre). Their recommendation was for me to forget about the TD and look for a 4.0 petrol instead.
Hey, probably a little late for this reply but anywayz,
The only reason the xj should be cutting out is if your giving it hard into a corner and your low on fuel.
The auto's seem to be quiet enough (unless its a dud). Listen to the advice you recieved on the forum and keep looking.
33's arent that hard to fit onto an xj as long as you are prepared to cut guards.
4.5 inch lift is enough to fit em if you got flares fitted.

Thanks for the heads up guys, I am still looking XJ you got mail. I am really after a 98-2000 prefer leather too, I want a few comforts in this one, since the lux has none.
As for the guard cutting to fit 33's, I have no dramas with that in fact it is the missus biggest fear.
I have driven a few now but still lookin, if ya see one in your area Pls let me know.
