problems

Post by Matt_88 »

just got my ute on the road and after bout 3 or 4 days driving it the car is making a weird wineing sound.
if anyone has ever heard a car with straight cut gears this is wat it sounds like. it mostly does it when i back off and dont accelerate.

it seems to be coming from the gearbox/transfer.

i really dont know what it is and its making me worry and not want to drive it!

the car is a 1977 fj45 ute with a 2f and 4 speed box. it has a brand new clutch and im pretty sure the gearbox has been reco'd.

does anyone have any ideas?

cheers
matt

well if it was reco'd we didnt get it done and yes we put new oil through engine, gearbox and transfer when it was finished.

i just changed oil in gearbox and transfer and the oil from the gearbox was clean as a whistle but the transfer oil is a different story. i has millions of little fillings through it(looks like glitter) and it was also pretty close to black(this was brand new oil 1 week ago).

wats the idler gear and is it worth gettin some1 to change or just get new transfer if i have to?

Sounds more like a bearing that has shit itself.

Could be one of the bearings wasn't given the correct amount of preload when it was put back together, or the thread stake wasnt enough to hold the bearing retainer at it's correct preload.

Take it to someone and have the bearings changed (as a set). May/may not need new gears, depending on the amount of abnormal wear (from incorrect position, and also the iron filings in the case), likely to be a new gear set rather than a single gear. Look at it as an opportunity for a ratio change....

I would get another tcase as well. I changed mine when I heard a similar sound and noise stopped right away. If you havent done it before though I strongly recommend fabbing something like this up.http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/tcremove1.php
Without it its a nightmare to get the old case off the shaft. Trust me, I spent two days trying to pull it off, then I read that thread and 20mins worth of booty fab and it came straight off.

generally if you get a wine on decell it is your rear diff pinion bearings.

Once again...not with week old black oil with silver bits in it. He has already established where the noise is coming from.

Sounds like the hard facing has come off the gears/bearing surfaces in the t/case. The oil is black due to the heat from the gears/brg being ground away.
