What springs for offroad
Just want to know what springs you are running for mainly offroad work? I have an 80 series which is fairly heavily laden, bars, batteries, winch etc and want about a 4 inch lift (already have castor, adj p/h, longer shocks etc) with good articulation. I only drive it on road to and from play time and will be looking at doing comp work later down the track. I dont have sway bars and dont want sag from a really soft spring, but dont want the rough ride of a really firm spring. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Polyairs or similar in soft springs? Pump them up for stiffness on-road, then deflate them for off-road articulation?

Air bags (as per Bentzook's gravity defying chariot) or pump-up shock absorbers could be other options - but pump-up shocks don't seem popular for off-road work. Are they even available?
Cheers,
Scott

Allot of people find the Lovells Platinum series work well for touring and seem to flex fairly well with light loads... the problem is getting a truck that wont sag with a load in it, and also flex really well is a difficult task that will probably take a few sets of springs to work it out how you like it..
NJSWB's suggestion of Polyairs is probably your best bet if you dont want to fiddle around with springs over and over. Make sure you also get the correct length shocks or this will also affect your articulation.

Mate,
My GQ runs 3.5 inch dobinson coils with 30mm coil spacers. The coils were the heavy duty ones and given the weight (similar accessories to yours) it travelled really well. They certainly haven't sagged and don't give a terribly harsh ride.
It might pay to look into them.
I can say now that as soon as I get my GU wagon, it too will be shod with dobinson coils. This time i will be going straight for the 4 inch ones though.
I hope this helps.

Yeah, thats a good call Scott, I already have Polyairs in my cruiser and find they work well for the heavy loads. I will retain them for the new springs which Im hoping will help hold a bit of the load. I will probably go with Dobinsons 4inch as I dont want to go too high (5/6 inch is too tippy IMO) and then if it isnt high enough, Ill put the spring packers in there too. Thanks for the replies guys.

i run 5in king springs in my 80 and matching length toughdogs. good spring rate as their a heavy truck so you dont wanyt a soft spring as it will sway all over the place. i would get the same springs if i had to start again. try www.kingsprings.com.au i paid $380 for the set.
had airbags and while excellent for towing, they are'nt real good off road as you need to have a minimum of 10psi to prevent pinching. this along with the spacer inside your spring doesnt allow it to work well in compression.
make sure your shocks really are the correct length as they dont make a 4in extended shock. if their not the correct length and you hang wheels often you can wreck the valves in them. limiting straps are best for this.
