5th gear sounds like a someone tapping drumsticks on a piece of cast iron when the engine is pushed, but when you back off, the sound all but dissappears. What would cause this at a guess? The box needs to come out, but I'm trying to find the simplest way to fix it. If it has *fallen off* or something simple, perhaps I could fix it?
Can this happen with these G52 boxes? I.e dropping a gear off. It appaently happened after slowed down for road works, then accelerated back up to speed, large bang occured, now this problem... I can't picture whats in a box, so any suggestions appreciated.

5th gear on these boxes is normally first to go because of small bearings and synchros...
To eliminate it being your tailshaft uni joints jack your car right up so the back wheels are of the ground, support the chassis so you max suspension droop and see if u can find any play or binding in the rear tailshaft uni joints.
If you dont feel comfortable doing that and diagnosing any problems... take your whole car to a place like total traction drivelines in moorabin and get them to check over it for you, ask him about a R series conversion if you are wanting to go chunkier than a G52.
Thinking outside the square.... its definately coming from the gear box? It could be your exhaust pipe hitting somewhere as the engine labours to pick up revs again? Or even your tappets... or those stupid plastic panels in the back (they rattle like fawk in my car).
After i had my pump rebuilt/injection work done, Dave @ rankin diesel said to me dont be afraid of taking the motor out to 4k RPM, as these engines are designed to rev like that... so instead of dumping a whole pile of fuel into your motor at low levs (which can lead to horrible things like cracked pistons and fawked rings) double clutch into 4th.
You gotta remember that there is a shtie load of torque being applied to 5th gear when you load it up.

definatly gear box related, silent in all other gears and all other rev ranges. Will check for uni joint problems, but is best described as a rattle. This sound bearing-esque?? That make my life any easier to repair?? What causes bearings to let go, if that is indeed the problem??

Does it fall out of gear at all when you get off the accelerator?
Do you get excessive movement in the gear stick when you accelerate
and then back off??
I had this happen in my G series and it got so bad I had to hold it in all
gears if I wanted to back off on the accelerator??
Needless to say, the problem got worse and worse until I couldn't put
it into gear easily any more!
It did last at least 3-4 months like this and I went wheeling twice.
If it is the gearbox, it can be costly to fix depending on where you go and
who does it. So start babying it, don't use 5th and start saving if it is
a gearbox issue.
Mine is starting to go again, slightly noisey under deccelleration at speed,
so it will need another overhaul in the distant future.
Cheers,
Bart

The Lux is back. New and Improved v2.0!
nope, certainily doesn't fall from gear, nor is there excessive movemnet. The best I can describe it is a rattle, albeit a loud one. Sounds like something knocking against the gearbox casing on the inside. When in float (no accel, no deccel) it is almost silent, on decel its noisy and then the faster/harder you go, more noise up to the point of embarrasment!! Head turning even.
Sound like a bearing?? Not that I really unnderstand what that means, but regardless, I guess the box must come out!
