Leaking Fuel Pump - How much and Where (Vic)?
Hi,
The fuel pump on my TD42 is leaking around the top plate seal. I know this is a common problem with the introduction of low sulfur fuel. The truck has 190,000km on the clock and there are no other problems evident with the fuel system so I don't want to do a full pump rebuild.
Who has had their seal replace recently? Where can I get this fixed at a decent price in (or near) Melbourne?

I think people have done it themselves fairly cheap - repair by BJ Diesel or AG Diesel will be costly.iwannabeapirate wrote:Hi,

try searching for other threads on it, I think the seal is only $30 - but complete repair is in many 100's
not a hard job - just hurts the arms a little as access it tight
Seals are cheap, labour would be the cost.
If you do it yourself, make sure you clean the area around the pump first as you dont want any dirt getting into the pump.

I bought a genuine Nissan seal made from Viton rubber, which is not affected by the LSD. It cost about $8.?? a few years back and was an order in job. It looks like an odd shapped o-ring (circular section rubber).
Fitting it can be a bit of a pain, but is not too hard if you have a few hours to spare. Only basic tools are required. Couldn't help you with the labour cost from a diesel shop sorry.
You will eventually have to get the pump pulled down as there are other seals that will begin to leak too, but if you can make a cheap repair now to put off expensive repairs for a little while is often well reveived by the wallet. Mine lasted a year or more before starting to leak at the side.

Also while doing the top seal. Replace the throttle shaft seal. Only takes anothee couple of minutes.
Mine did the top seal, and I had the shaft seal reaplaced also. Cost was about $60 bucks all up in parts. The 2 seals where about $12 total, KFC for 3 people (sparky stood around and was a pain in the arse and did nothing) and a slab of beer for the bloke that did the job. While I supervised.

Intake can stay on. Might be easier to remove the batt. Gives more elbow room. Oh and mine had screws and they where a prick to undo. Apparently they now use hex screws.iwannabeapirate wrote:Thanks all for the replies.

I found Nathan's write up on the patrol list about how he went about changing the seal and besides a few tricks it seems like a relatively easy job.

i have the same problem but overcome it by only using caltex diesel
