31's on my Vitara?
31's on my Vitara?
has anyone ever tried fitting 31's onto a vitara with only the OME suspension lift? i know its gonna hit and scrape, but i'm curious to find out just how much id have to hack away to get em to fit.
i know i could put a bodylift on it and then it'd be easy, but the vitara is way to narrow and high for my liking, so i want to keep the COG as low as possible, thats why i'm wondering if id be able to fit em with some friendly coaxing with a hammer and grinder

with a standard suzuki 15x7 sunrasia with 31's I think you would have to trim the entire guards away just to get the tyre into the wheel tub and then they will hit the top of the rear tub on uptravel in the rear. and the rear front firewall big time, with 2 or 3" body lift everything only just clears.

Was going 32"s but I got offered some 31"s cheap today so I may be able to answer that in a couple of days unless the guy changes his mind - in which case I'll just have to wait until the next deal turns up or buy new 32"s. Lots of people seem to have done 31"s with 3" body lift but that seems a little illegal in QLD (whether or not that's important is up to you). Certainly with 2" suspension and 2" body it wouldnt be an issue on normal Sierra offset rims.
I'll be chopping my guards very slightly to clear the 31"s. The main contact point with the rims I'm looking at is the rear of the front arch so a little trimming should fix that with no major dramas - and I'd need the flexy flares fitted for the biga$$ offset I'm looking at anyway.
Of course there are 31"s and 31"s. I found that some old BFG 10R A/T's only just touched with no body lift or suspension lift, so I got 30"s and they touched almost as much even after the 3" of lift it has so far......
Antt I reckin u need to sit down and think about what you really want to use your vitara for.....if you are going to get serious and the grinder out on the guards, then keep it going and chop the IFS out and stick a live axle under there.....The IFS is going to be the one thing that will limit what your vehicle will do...ive been on countless trips with pajeros and prados etc that have gone ok, but they have usually had to flog the crap out of their car to get through where any live axle 4wd simply walked over it..
Youve prolly heard this oodles of times before so i wont ramble.....
So yeh i reckon if u r gonna hack at it, then go all the way really

i'd like to chop the ifs out, but being a pov uni student, can't really afford to . i don't think i'd bother doing it anyway, i'd sell it and buy a sierra.
at the moment it goes plenty well enough with the locker to get places i want to go, but it just doesn't have the width that id like, thats why i'm trying to increase it.

Listen to your own advice

So I'm stuck with the butchering and 31"s.
however those who know me know that is half the fun. Having a break to let the grinder cool down right now........
PS if you wanna go 31" and wider offset think about the consequences to your upward tuck...... as people have said you're already a lot wider than a Sierra.
PPS I need all 67mm per side of the flexy flares so at least 140mm wider than stock now.......

Got the BFG's on with a lot more work than expected - partly cos the BFG's seem to be significantly bigger than expected (about 31.5 inches worn compared to a usual set of 31"s being about 30.5" or so). About maybe 1/4 inch smaller than my mates new 32" Silverstone Muddies.
Also due to determination to have one wide ass car got carried away and got 15x8 rims witrh -25mm offset per side which made finding the clearance harder on full lock. 15x7's or -13mm might just be a lot more sensible for those who are determined to follow me.....
Any one of slightly smaller 31"s, or 15x7"s or -13mm offset would be enough to make this task a LOT easier.
At least on the upside the car is now 170cm wide from treadblock to treadblock and over 6' tall with only 1" bodylift and 2" suspension lift. The shot shows it with the rear wheels in the gutter so I'm standing on a rise of about 5-6".
Will go the full 2" bodylift shortly for a little more clearance.
Wiped the numberplate to protect the guilty.........
PS Antt it was a bit of a butcher job if you're up for a press, hacksaw grinder and mallet job go for it!
antt wrote:lookin good viagra , do they still rub in places, or did ya manage to fit bash out enough clearance?
Nahhh. even the extra inch of body lift wont stop em rubbing (although it wont be an issue really then). I need someone who is REALLY good with a welder so we can cut and weld some major cabin work.
I can bash or press enough to make it clear but it's gonna pop seams
3" body lift no problem clearing them but not legal here in QLD...... (dunno why I'm worried about not legal with 5" bigger than standard tyres though)
The only time it's gonna be an issue is when I'm on full steering lock with full suspension travel so I don't think it's gonna happen that often anyway. If it happens I can always back up and have a go - I know what rubbing sounds like

Ya ain't rubbin' yet
GO BIGGER
Considering I need to desperately upgrade the brakes for road use, I think I'll wait a couple of months to do that, exhaust etc.....
AND GET OUT IN THE BLOODY MUD NOT INTO THE GARAGE!
Plus when the cops bust me having big rubber I say - cmon it's only standard 4WD 31"s and they LET YOU OFF!!!!!!!
But, the good thing about 33"s is then they should match nicely with the Sierra transfercase gearing and bring me back to my original 26" gearing.
Still the wallet has taken a pounding so I'll need to take it easy for a couple of months.....
PS Anyone wanna buy some Vitara front brakes for their Sierra? I'll have some soon going cheap PM me.
antt,
Thought this might be of intrest to you, got a vitara running 31-10.5's (use f100 standard offset) and 32-9.5's off road. There is no lift (got stock saged stuff) only a three inch body lift, no tunnel modification for sticks. The front quaters are only trimmed 15mm on the rear half on the front panels, no rear quater cutting needed.
And no they dont scrape unless really carrying some weight.
hope this is of some assistance to ya.

I am currently running 33 x 9.5's on my vitara with 50mm suspension and 75mm body lifts, get a little bit of scrubbing at the front and has reduced my turning circle but it still looks good. I am about to put another 20mm lifit in the front because the bar and high mount have weighed it down a bit . Need to get it back over 2m high again. Nothing like standing out in the crowd!!!!.
Also you will find that if you put 20mm packers front and rear you will be able to run 31's only restricting your turning circle marginally.

PROCOMP -> What more can I say?

Was looking at 33x9.5"s but they got sold out under me - shit happens. The lighter wheel and tyre weight would be a significant benefit for braking and acceleration and if you have to go 33"s they'd be the best option for the Vitara.
If you go the narrower offset (like these guys have with the standard F100 Rims) you will have less clearance issues than me.
However, as you said nothing like standing out in the crowd and the wide stance does look pretty damn good.......
I'd love to be 2m tall too but the carpark near my work only just squeezes my Vitara in with 2" to spare now, so I think I just have to stay in the 190's......
Antt and I can't legally do 3" body lift in QLD :( But for those who can it is the easy option for those in more lenient states. Given the lack of upward travel on the Vitara's front end it should make most clearance issues into non-issues.
