V8 conversion on a GU.

i have a GU 2.8 turbo diesel, and the fuel sensor has sh*t is self, it will work out cheaper to do a engin conversion. to give it some more power, has any body done a v8 engin conversion on a 2.8 TD.

what would be the best deisel V8 to put in one of these?

Its cheaper to do a $6-10k conversion than the Fuel Sensor???? Shit Ive heard of expensive Nissan parts but Thousands for a fuel sensor? :rofl:

I think the 2.8 doesnt have the good running gear (G'box etc), I went thru this on the Nissan list month or 2 back... 2.8's are worth nothing now, one went for $22k not long ago

I was thinking the same thing you are. Could be wrong, look it up there.

its going to cost $4-5k to send it of to nissan to fix. and there the only place that have the mechine to fix it , the mechine is worth $250k

Again I find it hard to believe a fuel sensor could cost $4000-5000 NEW Let alone to get yours repaired!

Forgive me for being wrong or anything. I think (read - think) i read that somewhere about fuel senders being a problem and the reason for being a fortune is - fuel sender is cheap. Its the LOCATION of the sender being inside the goddam engine or something i think (read - think). thus being expensive as nearly the whole engine has to be taken apart to get to it.

FORGIVE ME IF IM WRONG.. I just write what Ive heard/read.

bill lynne is pulling out his 4.2 td and manual box to fit a v8 petrol auto.
ring jeff from "dog tyred" in strathpine as he is helping him and would know more details.
might be simpler than a chevy V8 diesel.

correct, you would need engine, transmission, transfer, electrical mods, mounts, compliancing etc... cut your losses and trade it in...

compliance wouldn't be a problem wouldnt be a problem as the at motor and gerar box combo came out in that car.

I was going to buy a 2.8 for very reason of doing a swap. But the gearbox has all the wrong ratios I think to run a low reving V8 diesel likwise the diff ratios are not suitable.

Basically ring one of the places that does em and they will give the full explanation better than I can remember the conversation 2yrs ago. Brunswick in perth were the most helpful I talked to.

The gearbox from the 3.0l TDI can be retained for the conversion. The end result from this model conversion is the same as if it were from a 4.2, TD42, or TB42. Also aroundabout the same cost involved. Diff ratios must be taken into account when doing the conversion though as all the different model Nissan Patrol's came out with different diff ratio's. The 2.8l came with 4.6, and the 3l came with 4.3.

I have not done a 3l conversion to date which surprises me because the early model engines were time bombs!!!!!!!!

Most people I know with the 3l Patrol that are looking for noticeable power gains go for a front mount intercooler, 3" exhaust, and the safari computor inline upgrade. "Apparently" good for 30% gain in H/P.

Does not come close to the torque curv of the Chev diesel though.

Thanks for that. Have a 3.0l and yeah low end is a prob combined with the inadequate transfer ratios.

If it blows then I will have to make a choice if it is in warranty get the new motor put in and then sell it for a reasonable swap option wouldn't have a clue what i would get for a fresh 3.0l.

Relocating the intercooler I haven't heard much about though and I have been sceptical of the 3in as it is 2 1/2 from the turbo anyway.

The Dtronic does work but it still is only a increase across the rev range and doesn't target low end specifically. I actually got it dynoed (at no cost) which isnt normal but it was the first one fitted at ARB northern Vic so they wanted one laminated for customers to see the difference.

Gearboxes in 3.0s shit the 5th gear, and clutches arent that good... Both Rolys got 50,000 out of theirs...

Both roly's GU's were driven like they were stolen and both ran humungo tyres (35's and 36's) for the ratio's and don't forget the four hundred thousand other bits they broke.

Steves was still a ladies car at that stage, and the dealer told him he should be happy with that many klms..... :o

Bruce so when he rocked up to lend me his GPS with Q78's on it was a Ladies car. Dealer can say what he likes because as we all know the clutches aren't warranted. I have 100,000km on a clutch no slip none. But mine hasn't been emersed in mud like steves was when those pics were up on the the Aircon saga. Otway ranges are another of his favorite places to yeah.

Victoria would be one of the worst places in OZ for fuggin clutches. Comes from people getting bogged and then spending ten minutes fighting the fact their stuck. All the time givin the muddy water all the chance in the world to wreck the clutch.

If I took all of the clutch failures I know down there and made an assumption I would say there is not one 4wd maker that puts out a good standard clutch but I dont, I put it down to being driven hard. Steve would the first to admit it.

Okay your turn last say I know its like givin up smokin!

He wasnt runnin big tires then, they were still stockers... But he has used it to tow his race car.

Agree on the any car and clutches, but if your plannin more neddies thru it, its something to look at....

To add to this, I never put standard clutches back into any 4x4.
When converting to Chev Diesel (or even just a standard clutch replacement), we always install a Daiken heavy duty, or Safari clutch and pressure plate combo.

Absolutely Right Bogged!!!
Early model 3.0L do have a problem stripping 5th gear.
Cheaper to replace 5th gear than a whole gearbox though.
