shortned chassis.
I know this has been covered b4 but i couldnt find what i am after
If i want to shorten my chassis, can i do it myself then have it approved by someone. ie: can i weld onto my own chassis with absolutely no welding certificate. I want to chop it and then weld in a 100x100 box as a tow bar.
ill be ringing an engineer this week when i get a chance, but i wanted to get some ideas first, and if anyone that is an engineer or can approve the work im about to do sing out, theres some dollars here for you.

Just did this last week. Chopped off just over 350mm from the rear of the chassis. Re-welded the tow bar section back on so didnt
need the 100x100 box section. The engineer said it was all sweet
as long as I got a qualified welder/boilermaker with a AS 1554 certificate.
A bit of a mission finding one with said ticket I tell you. Only charged $40/hour on a b loody saturday
Welder dude lives northside, could prob. dig up his mob. if you want it.

mick best way to do this is to un pick the welds off the rear cross member
cut to required length then slip the old cross member in wack it all the way up with a block of wood and hammer and weld it back in ... looks factory ... opps didn't read the towbar bit .. but this is how i did mine anyhow :p

i was looking at cutting it not far behind the last "pipe" cross member and then have the 100x100 in there for like a say attaching tow hooks and that, but only cause i figure if im gonna cut it i might aswell cut heaps.....any opinions on that?Hoonz wrote:mick best way to do this is to un pick the welds off the rear cross member

oh, and the spot i was gonna cut it at is already bending up, so i dont think i will be able to re-use the last cross member.
I sliced my lux just behind the rear hangers, then cut and welded a section of 5mm walled rhs in place across the back, no complaints from the mechanic doing my rwc. I didn't put the tow ball back on though, put a ttow hook either side on the chassis though.
