4.5 80 - economy **FIXED** now getting 7kms per ltr
Got me stuffed. When i got it I was getting about 450kms from the main tank. Then I had it serviced and now is about 350kms from the main tank. It is a 95 4.5 auto.
Considering they can't punch any codes in to change settings (you can only get codes out of it - which it is not coming up any) WTF is going on!!!!
Only thing they changed was the plugs. They seem to think it is the cat convertor, how i can't see unless it was major blocked it would cause such a dramatic drop. I have spoken to some guys and they say they get 500 from a tank and another indentical car gets 400kms?
Cheers

mate I get down into the 14s with mine and thats a mixture of city and open rd.(285 tires for the rd)Driving casually.I get the sort of sort of fuel consumption your talking about when Im 4wding.I wouldnt have a clue what would make it worse though.Fuel meter.air cleaner??Mines a manual though
14 ltrs per 100 - youre killing me. However I have had a thought that tells me that because are exhaust sensors (not o2) that sense back to the intake manifold the exhaust may have an effect on it. The exhaust is original and due for a replacement anyway. i think it is a bit stuffed as it has leaks and cracks so i'll try a new one this week and see what it does. I'll post results

A few things to check...
Exhaust baffle might have fallen into muffler. you dont have a kat...its a resonator.....brakes might be sticking, tyres might be low on pressure, the tune up might have advanced the timing too much...the computer backs it offf if u get a few pings and economy is out the door....r u using thesame fuel??? some of it is shit./...if all else fails....injecters....but hey...do alot of checking first....it could be bad leads...makes sence if they yanked on them....pricks are hard to change plugs on especially no6...maybe the plugs they put in arnt right....wouldnt be the first time wrong ones were used...

Just for anyone else info - this turned out to be a corroded connection at the coil. It was way down on output 22,000 volts and now up to 44,000 - big difference on output. Also picked up 20kw of power and now at 180kw after the dyno run. So far seems to be heaps better on fuel. Air?fuel mixture ratio was pretty high, Mostly all caused by a bloody dirty connection
I also fitted a new exhaust system which was blocked a little as well

Don't know how to explain the power increase. That was 180 on the dyno. They spent a couple of hours on the set up to tune it and a 2.5 exhaust as well.
Other than that I can only go on what i saw on the screen.
Goes like it's got a lot more. It's like driving with the power button on all the the time and then some.

I agree. When I said city driving it was along heathcote road in sydney every day plus the usal traffic. The average I get when daily driving and trying to conserve fuel is in the 15 ltr per 100k bracket. When my girlfiend drives it it uses about 17ltrs per 100.Its a manual with 145k on it and Im very happy with the consumption.Even 4wding it not too bad compared to a v8 disco ive had and some other 4bs......Its had a very easy life by an old couple that may be the reason?

Yeah 180kw doesn't sound right. These people had it on a 4 wheel dyno (can't imagine they pulled the engine out and put it on a engine dyno to get a flywheel output)? If so then its possible it was 180 horse power at the wheels rather then kilowatt. Even 180 hp seems high at the wheels, thats about 132kw meaning from the "Factory Spec" of 165 (if this figure is correct) at the flywheel its only losing 33kw through the driveline to all 4 wheels. Am I thinking too hard or not hard enough?dinos4x4 wrote:how did they pick up a extra 20kw
the motors pump out 165kw at the fly wheel in stock form
Dunno, I'll check again tomorrow with the dyno mob - maybe i just heard and saw it wrong? I didn't really question it as i hadn't looked to see what factory was std before so I just thought ok thats sounds good. Putting on the dyno was able to find the problem under load and see what the performance differences were before and after.
Just had unichip fitted with dual mapping and dyno tuned 4 weeks ago to my 80 series .
On 91 octane std ulp it went from 54kw to 55.7kw.
On lpg 105 octaine it went from 54kw to 56.4kw.
driving all 4 wheels with 285/75/16 AT tyers.
Dosn't look much but makes a BIG difference drives much better.
And more power on lpg.
Fuel consumption yet to be tested.
I would love 180kw at the wheels.

Any updates to the performance and fuel usage ...........?
Im looking at getting either the 80 or 100 in petty auto for a new family car ......and the way fuel costs are these days its gunna hurt the pocket if they average up to 22l a hundred ....
And im limited to what I can buy as it has to auto as the misses cant drive the stick real well .........80 series vx turbo diesel would be nice but the chances of finding 1 in good nick is few and far between
Also any1 out there with the 80 or 100 petty running it lpg what are thoughts for value for money outlay for the setup considerin the price of lpg these days and talk that it is gunna have another hefty price rise soon ?............fuel consumption to cost averages would be appreciated ...
cheers

Update - the fuel economy is back to where it was - poor - it's just not very poor. I get about 420 out of 75-80 ltrs.
However i have a full computer conversion going in this week which by all accounts will greatly increase horsepower and improve economy. They are basing the same conversion on a 4.5 cruiser ute that ended up getting 11 kms per ltr and went really hard. Given mine is a wagon and auto it won't gain as much economy but i would be happy with 15 lts per 100.
fairly big dollars for the conversion though about $2500. But when you can't do a single thing with a factory computer as far a fuel /air ratio goes and timing (not just distributor rotation) and the aftermarket allows you to tune all this should make a difference. Think of a std carby 308, get the fuel air mixture right and dyno it and the improvement is quite high so it's the same theory. either that or i am blowing $2500 grand but it's worth the experiment. Gets put in thursday

My 80 had a similiar issue with economy. when I first got it I was getting 370km to 75-80lt with 35" tyres It suddenly dropped to 330km with no explanation and has been like this for months with no solution. After reading this post I thought I'd check all coil connections they seemed ok but I cleaned them anyway. Well 2 tanks of fuel later and I got 410km out of about 72lt both times fuel economy has gone from 22.5lt-100km to 17.5lt-100km . This made a huge difference and solved a nagging problem for me(should have a few more dollars now to).
Will be interesting to see how the computer conversion performs.

cool, at least i was useful to someone!grub_80 wrote:My 80 had a similiar issue with economy. when I first got it I was getting 370km to 75-80lt with 35" tyres It suddenly dropped to 330km with no explanation and has been like this for months with no solution. had the new computer put in. goes really well with pwr button in. smoother throughout the rev range. drove the car from a full tank and drove 105 kms and then refilled. used 15.5 ltrs to do 105kms not bad me thinks. still needs some fine tuning on the dyno again and i'll see what i get out of a full tank, although the consumption shouldn't change. the 100km test was highway driving
p
Ive been away for a while and as soon as i got home filled the cruiser. It did 486km for 73Ltrs fuel and I never left brisbane metro.Could probably add a few more k's for the bigger tires too
Good to see you sorted yours out thats pretty good for an auto

I bought an 80 a week or so ago. Put 1000km on it already. I have been doing a few fuel economy stats for it.
Its a 1997 4.5 auto with 140 000km. Its running 33's and a 2 inch suspension lift...Around town it seems 19L/100km is the norm. On the highway today, I averaged 14.3L/100km. I was quite happy with that. Thats what my 2h turbo diesel 60 was using on 35's.

Not fair i had to go through issues to get it sorted and yours is good off the fllor. BUGGER.carts wrote:I bought an 80 a week or so ago. Put 1000km on it already. I have been doing a few fuel economy stats for it.

Update - have put extractors on as i believed it had an exhaust leak, which it did turn out to be. I can't believe the gains in economy and power. Absolutely flies on the highway and so far the tank is above 1/4 and have done 430kms. It has NEVER done that.
