some read from the injector pump & some read from the flywheel. I am not sure where else. these are the 2 places that I have experianced. The problem sounds more like a wiring problem or the tacho itself to me.

I had the same problem on my 2L Diesel.

The sensor on the back of the fuel pump (between fuel pump and engine block, hardest thing to get to ever!) was stuffed. It slowly stopped working until I had no tacho.

I replaced it with a 2nd hand sensor that I was lucky to score from a Diesel Mechanic for cheap and all was fine again. If it is that sensor then they are hard to find as most want to sell them with the pump 2nd hand.

I have never priced a new one.

Not sure if the 2.8 has the same sensor though???

Not sure if any Toyotas do, but another place for diesels is off the alternator.
