Seats and Harnesses

After reading about the tradgic accident the other day, it made me think more about doing something with the seats and seatbelts in my lux.

Whats the go with harnesses?

Are there different types 3 point, 5 point etc?

Just thinking of getting some snugger seats and simple harnesses that would be a lot better at holding someone in than the standard issue?

it's illegal to wear a harness instead of the 3pt lap/sash seat belt on the street; but it's legal to have it mounted in conjunction with the seat belt. so add a harness to your rig and use it off road; but don't remove the original seat belt. it has to do with emergency rescue rather than the performance of the harness. when you've crashed, a seat belt can be released quickly by anyone; but a harness buckle can confuse the rescuer and also tangle up with your limbs as they try to extract you from the wreckage.

with a harness, i would go no less than 4pt - but 6pt is over kill and would be cumbersome to use regularly. i would use grade 8 bolts for mounting. i would also add padding under the straps to prevent bruising. i would use a seat designed to take a harness as well. the rear straps shall be mounted below shoulder height so that if the car is upside down, you are still held to the seat.

bucket seats are legal so long as they are well mounted. you are supposed to get an engineer to check the mounting system, but i've never heard of a cop defecting anyone because of it.

i will be using a 3pt harness for the passenger (because i already have one) and a 4pt harness for the driver. i'm going with plastic or fibreglass seats with removable padded covers. this gives me hoseability and saves weight.

A 6 point cage, high back seats and a 5 point harness saved me and my passenger from being dead or at least a trip to hospital , we walked away without a scratch but some bruising after falling 2.5 metres onto rocks on a river bank.

Some of the other guys in the competition had no roll bar and lap sash seat belts , crazy with some of the terrain we were going through

Go to places like Aussie trackwear or another race/speedway provider for the seats and harnesess. You could try some of the offroad racers as well

i have SPARCO race seats in the spook(still have to get harnesses)
i got these from revolution in brisvegas for $549 each,try not to get the cheapie seats from the big auto shops(you get what you pay for).as for the 2 harnesses ill be going 4 point.apparently you must mount the 2
shoulder strapes at 45D.

I have 4 point harrness (road legal) cost a little over $400 for the pair. fitted into ute cab, easy to do a bit hard to fit in any other cab. and they are aust standards approved.

klippan do a legal 4 point harness. as far as i know, it is the only approved one available. they are not much more than a 2" child seat harness, but they are legal. do what nam suggested, use the seatbelts for the street, and proper 3" 4 or 5 point harnesses off road. i have a 3" 5 point in my dragster, very annoying to do up at the best of times. it is the proper latch type, not the clip in type like a seatbelt.

Good info. I like the idea of having both belt types, would make daily driving a lot simpler. Would hate to get in the habit of not putting the harness on though when I have the choice of both belts and just think, 'nah, the seatbelt will be fine'.

So to put a harness set up in my Single Cab Lux, what am I looking at? What needs to be installed to rig the harness, internal cage etc?

is it true that you can't run the upper 2 harness straps straight back down behind the seats??? i remember reading somewhere that it can injure you even more if they're set up like this :?

yeah from memory its meant to be something like 15' +/- of flat so youd have to either bolt it to the back of the cab or run a bar across the back wich you can mount it to

As well as the 5 point Crow harness FrankenJeep has inertia reel belts as well which I very rarely use as a 5 point harness isn't illegal here , mind you most people in Indonesia don't use seat belts.

The inertia reels do come in handy for running up to the shops or when I was out on the town on a Saturday night [worried about someone stealing the harnesses as the Willys Jeep is completely open.

They can be purchased from Repco, Autobarn etc but I believe they would have a crazy markup on the price. If someone could find out the price that would be great as I only have one phone line here on the Mountain.

I am looking at the Street Racer one (third one on page - link provided)

If anyone can get them cheap let me know.

Then its a matter of new seats for the lux, dont think I can afford race seats, but some Honda Bucket Seats etc may be ok, I am not sure.

if the shoulder belts run down the back of the seat, it will try to compress your back as you move forward in an accident, and will break your back. not good. in a single cab hilux, make a taxi bar that goes from left to right, and make a frame that bolts up to most of the seat belt anchors. you could then either weld tabs to the taxi bar, if you have the space, or use wrap around harnesses.

Pirate have tried a harness system on thier site, may be worth looking at the way the guy on that set his up. Under pirate \ tech. Bit of info on there.

A normal 3 - 4 pt harnes can be about $200 - $600, there is a good place in Mitcham, Vic, called revolution racegear, they do all types of specialized racing stuff
i've also heard that you cant mount the harnesses pulling directly down to the floor from the seat as it can break a persons back in a bad accident!! (but of course that what i heard)

I can supply them for $200 each and they come with fitting instructions. they are best mounted at 10degree below the shoulder ht. and at 45 degrre at the hip.

if you fit the harness you find u will use them all the time because they uncomfortable to sit on.

next time you look at a full chassis type racecar, like a drag car, v8 super tourer or nascar, it is the bar that goes from b pillar to b pillar just under the door line. in our drag car, the drivers seat rests on it, and the harness wraps around the tube.

back again, maybe if your conserned about roll overs, fitt window mesh for offroad and stay with a lap sash belt set up.

As someone mentioned already Revoloution racegear or Aussietrackwear can supply them as well as seats to suit check a race type mag for their locations :twisted:
