is it possible to adjust when it shifts up a gear as mine shifts at around 2700, which in my opinion is to low, as often it just doesn't have the revs to keep going and then switches down a gear.
What are you talking about ?
Full throttle shift? Light throttle?

The kickdown cable on a ZF4HP22 or ZF2HP22 determines the shift points at different accelerator depression.
If you have an 81 Rangie (as per the Nom de plume) with a ZF, what linkage do you have for the kickdown cable?

Well the 4HP22 in my 3.9 will change at about 4800 from 1to2 and about 5600 from 2 to three, and that is about what a 3.5 should do.
Does the kickdown work? ie when you put your foot on the accelerator HARD, does the trans kick down at say 90Kmh .
The first place to look is the kickdown cable. it is situated behind the throttle linkage. Look to see it is attached and in place. there should be a small bit of lead crimped to the cable and this should be about 2-4MM from the screw adjuster .
If you cycle the Linkage through from idle to full throttle by hand it should of course be tight and become hard to turn just before the end of travel ( the kick down).
If the cable is loose you should adjust it as above.

i think he is talkin about standard light throttle, I too think they up change to early and it sucks exspecially on hills
Mine changes from first to second at around 1900rpm then almost straight into third at about 2200rpm.
If i floor it yeah sure it winds out to about 4800rpm but i not talkign about flooring it and i dont think 81rangie is either.
I think if both first and second were held to around 2500 you would utilise more of the engines peak performance in the rev range and prob save fuel. Could be completely wrong thou, but often i find myself changing the gears all the time and i dont wanna do that I AM LAZY
