Oil cooler

Post by jtraf »

Have seen a few of these around and thought that it may be a little better than the radiator type. Want to mount an 18in long one to keep the tranny cool in my Jimny powered auto sierra.

Would this be better or worse than a radiator type one?

Pic don't work but I am talking about a finned alloy cooler. Looks like a piece of pipe with a heap of heat sink finns around it.

When mounting trans coolers u get best results it the fluid runs from the trans to the radiator cooler, then through the after market cooler, and then back to the trans.

Used that type of cooler with not many good results found that the type that is like a radiator works best (the one with two tanks and small fins between tanks) most tranny shops call the drivetek oil coolers i have been told to run them off a t piece witch is installed in the main transmission line.

The radiator trans coolers are quite small and restrictive and depending on what your doing the coolant either is heating the oil or the oil is heating the coolant. I've heard of trans oil temps of 140 + boiling the coolant in the radiators. After talking with some well respected auto trans builders I deleted the ones in the radiator and am now using 2 front mount ones in series and the trans temps are the most stable they've ever been. I have one of the "generic" black ones all the auto places use as I had it previously and I've also got the PWR one and the PWR one it terrific. I used the largest one they had listed at 280mm X 255mm X 19mm thick but had it made with 5/16" barbs instead of the 3/8" ones they had listed for the unit and mounted behind the air con "pusher" fan.
Regards Andrew.
