engine conversion - hilux/ 4runner
Hi guys I've had a good search about this but still have some specific questions about what I can do for an engine conversion The car is a 4runner with the auto and injected 4y. Its going in for a service tomorrow and I'm expecting the mechanic to say something along the lines of bad luck, burnt valve, farked head etc..... its been having problems Good riddance to bad boat anchors I say... I'll actually be upset if it turns out to be minor
The auto allows me to use any motor that came with that auto in any toyota vehicle so I can take my pick effectively as long as I can get the auto bellhousing to go with it
***I need something that will fit without a body lift.... no body lifts I'd have to get that approved the hard way and that's a headache I don't need. What fits at std height of ifs vehicles?
***Turbo 4, na 6, turbo 6 I don't really mind (as long as insurance is aok) but what do you do about a/c etc I'm guessing I can't retain mine I'll have to get the a/c to suit whatever motor I buy
***Same question for power steering
Basically I need to know what fits and works with my gearbox..... will fit in my engine bay..... have adequate power (150hp plus min.).... and be easy enough to buy at a reasonable price and insure. What have others here done I've searched the net high and low and learnt a lot but its all bit patchy
Opinions???

smoke, a really funny smell like burning electrics/ plastic and <200kms from a 70L tank (gas and petrol about the same).cplux wrote:what sort of problems has the 4y-e it been having i have found my 4y-c to be an unbelievably strong motor??
Plus its slow. Not shagged slow but just general small pushrod petrol motor in big 4wd slow If the problem turns out to be something simple I guess I'll keep it but right now I'm hoping it gives me an excuse to look at better motors
It was rebuilt 10k ago but done by the owner so who knows how quick he chucked it together Compression tested well 6 months ago (really well actually) but we'll see tomorrow hey
More ideas on the conversions??? 1uz would be cool. Fits my auto just needs mounts, wiring and adequate cooling Anything I'm forgetting??? 2k for a half cut with the right sump, all the bits (inc bellhousing and a/c), 800 to wire it up, 500 to fit it and that and 500 for the radiator.... 3800 total yeah Not doing it myself no time
Mine cost me approx $5000 and that was doing it all myself. But got just over $3000 for my 2.8 and turbo so any out layed around $2000.-Mick- wrote: 3800 total yeah Not doing it myself no time
Half cut is $2000 to $2500
Engineers report $500 to $600
you`ll need atleast a different bell housing so say $500
So there is $3000 to $3500 without anything else.
thanks guys for the reply.... I wouldn't say this was flooded with responses
The car has developed a new and more frustrating characteristic now it stalls at traffic lights only when coming to a stop...... and its auto Really hard to start again but once it goes its all good for ages, till it stalls again a week later
Going to talk with a place called allstar tuning in virginia this tomorrow... anyone have experience with them

hey thanks guys. Had it checked out by 2 mechs and 2 gearbox dudes no one can tell me what's going on
I'll see how these fellas go tomorrow they know toyotas apparently.....
Was just reading a thread in gen tech talking about converters freezing up when the car is warm cause lots of gas passes through em.... could explain the stalling and hard restarting

sister inlaws old colt used to stall and it was an auto..... lets just say its 150xxx kays was second time round. it was rooted and the stalling is prolly carb related. the idle jams closed sometimes in the old shitty carbs and they dont idle unless u hold the accelerator alittle.
good luck
rebuild and supercharge the original motor and try it out.

turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
um sort of I sposecplux wrote:did this problem get fixed?? interested to know what it was
The stalling was the converter freezing and only happens with lpg from one particular servo (cheap crap I spose). I have tried every other servo around then that one again and sure enough it stalled on the dodgy servos gas again. Just gotta stay away from that servo
Still blows a bit of smoke but this is mainly on gas and probably a fuelling issue. Mech ran over it and gave it a clean bill of health (damn) Its still slow but hey its a 2.2 pushrod petrol I just drive it a bit harder so its not too bad and the economy is no worse than it was before The burning smell looks to be a small steering box leak that we couldn't see before.... smells funny when that grease burns.
Reading other peoples accounts of lpg it seems 200-250 k from 60l is not that abnormal after all I'd hate to try and justify a 3k lpg install at that sort of economy Petrol goes about 400k to 70 whatever litres which is about right...........the engines not tuned properly to run on either. Its somewhere in the middle
Basically it goes ok now. Even the old gearbox problem is pretty well gone it just doesn't do it anymore Gremlins hey. I don't give a stuff anymore though its gone at years end for an 02/03 navara.... sick of old cars and even sicker of modified cars
Don't forget to factor in $1000 for a crap new exhaust or close on $2000 for one worth having
Bolting the engine in and making it fit is normally the easy bit. FInd a good sparky to wire it all up. Mine had 1 loose wire that would make the engine stop!!!! Good wiring is everything.
Remember with any conversion, it is always more expensive, more time and more hassle than you first think. You'll spend months ironing out teething problems but at the end of it all, its soooooooooo worth it!!!
