BFG muds or Goodyear MTR's ?????
So i cant fit 15" wheels on the 80. I will have to stick with the 16's.
I WANT AS MANY OPINIONS ON THIS AS POSSIBLE!
Do i go 315/75/16 Muds or MTRS ??? I have heard alot of good thigs about the MTR's, and a few not so good about the "new" style Muds (rubber compound too soft/high wear rate?). They will be on the truck full time, ie, my only set of tyres.
Let me know what you think

MTR's are much quieter, and the sidewalls seem to be tougher than the BFG's. they are a bit soft though, expect to wear them out inside 40k km possibly less if you spin them up on rocks a lot.
consider also the Coopers ST 315's, very expensive and allegedly noisy but should last a long time. slightly 'roadier' tread than the BFG and MTR which may suit your daily driver requirement.
cheers

i got the new BFG M/T's on mine. i fitted them bout three months ago and yes it is true that they do get a little noisy. Nothing a little higher radio volume cant sound out. the wear on them are pretty good but i find that the only way to get solid grip is too let them down. when they are at road pressure than u are basically on A/T's when u get onto the soft stuff. The MTR's im not sure yet. a mate just fitted them, so give me another 3months and i will let u know.
cheers,

Life is for my own to live my own way......
Nice, all good stuff guys. Whats the closest size available in the MTRs at the moment?? Hmmm, 40000km.........i only do about 22-26000 a year, so the waer rate would probably be within what i can put up with.
By "on the water", are we talking weeks or months??
I was thinking a set of BFG AT's, but they didnt seem to work too well on rocks, regardless of how little pressure i ran in them. But the trade off was they were nice and quiet on road. I would trade noise for traction any day of the week tho....

"on the water" means that they are on the slow boat... expect the end of next month. Had a chat to a mate in Goodyear head office and he said that it will be a while still.
I still believe that the MTR's are the quietest MT on the market and the mass defection from the new BFG's to the MTR's speak for themselves. Currently the largest size avaliable here is the 285/75R16 or 33" but if you can hang out until then that would be the way to go.

End of next month sounds good....if they get here then that is!! Planning on breaking the 80 in for a week in october, so hopefully they will be here by then!! Still have to decide where to go tho.....
Having a look at the X Terrains too now.......wonder what type of price difference we are talking between the 2??

Visited local goodyear dealer today....
33" MTRs are $300 each
35" MTRs, no idea on price or delivery time
35" BFGs are $370 tire
35" X Terrains are $433 tire!!
Limit is about $1600, so it only leaves me with one option, the 33's.
The only other thing i can think of is wait and see if someone sells a second hand set of 315/75/16's........very doubtful tho

Wnt and visited Mannells this arvo (Nick, top bloke, nice to see someone who has TIME for his customers), and got the low-down on bits and pieces. Decided on:-
- 6" megalift with swaybar disconnects (daily driver)
- 315/75/16 Cooper ST's, good price and the 80,000 warranty
- and a cargo barrier
Now, wheres that fuggin taxman hiding?!?!

Just saw Luke's (XXXL80) cruiser....mad, just what i needed. He even let me take it for a run round the block!!! After seeing how his sits with the 5" rear springs, and 6" front, + the extra weight it has on board, im just goin 5" all round, no swaybars at all (!!!!!) and 35" BFGs, His BFGs have had 15000km of punishment and have bugger all wear on them (considering!)........
Hanging for it all now.....

I have been running 33 inch Goodyear MT/R for about a year and a half as a daily driver and offroad, up until 2 months ago I bought some 35 inch Simex pedes for hard core. The MT/R's are wearing well but they are soft, compared to other tires I have run over the years. My rears chew out alot more on the road because I have a detroit locker in the rear. In general compared to other mates BFG's who have holed several driving the same tracks with me, the MT/R's are holding up alot better.

tyres
niether! go pro-comp xterains
i had allways been a bfg user and wouldn't change. im glad i did, you know the difference between all terrains and mud terrains. same difference between bfg mudders and pro comps. excellent tyre, grip like the old sticky stuff to a blanket in the wet as quiet as a bfg(if a mud tyre can be quiet) excellent tyre!!!!!.

DD,
The Cooper 315's were going to be $338 each, but that price depended on whether or not i got the lift and tyres done at the same time (would be a little cheaper). Im not getting the Coopers anymore, going for BFGs (let the shit slinging begin!!), cos i could get 5 x BFGs and wheels interest free thru Bob Jane T Marts...so yeah

that is a pretty good price for the coopers, they can be had cheaper but not much.
if you buy the BFG's, you'd better get handy with sidewall repairs! I did two sidewalls in one day (actually within about an hour of each other) up at newnes about a year ago, I had to sew one of the sidewalls up with copper wire and then fill the gaps with sticky plugs. all in all, in 12 months I did 5 sidewall tears in a brand new set of BFG 33" mudders. which makes me a dead set moron, now I am running 35" BFG's (hey they were cheap)

My rig has 35" BFG MTs since I've had it. I have never had a hassle with these tyres. They cop a caning The sidewalls have been dragged along rocks on many occasions. I run them at about 10-12psi offroad.
They are the older style BFG
Slowhilux, you got mail
don't think i've ever busted one on a rock, they've copped a hard time on rocks and they worst that's happened is getting grit in the beads and having them go down. I think 3 out of 5 sidewalls were torn on tree roots sticking out into the track, and the others, who knows. they were inside sidewalls and were destroyed on 'normal' dirt roads at 'cruising' speeds with normal (30 - 40psi) inflation. maybe 70 kW is just too much power for BFG's ;)
Ive heard alot of bad things about the new muds, but i have also herd alot of good things too. But its too late now, they are on the car. Anyone ever seen a standard height 80 series with 35's on it?? Cos it looks fuggin Grimace!!!
