Ok I have spent a lot of time in the search area. I can find plenty of info on putting coils in the rear of a lux, what I cant find is someone who has actually done a surf rear, mainly different setups.
I am in Qld apparently it can be done legally, which is great, does anyone know of an engineer that has approved one. Having trouble finding one at the moment.
The car is a 98 dual cab IFS, main reason for doing it is ride, but I am hoping for better articulation also. I already have the rear chassis with all the mounts and diff. i will be getting someone to do the welding as I cant weld at all (yet).
What I would like to know is, is it a easy conversion to get legal or a major PITA.

Surf Rear in Hilux

I've done it and it is a good conversion.Ok I have spent a lot of time in the search area. I can find plenty of info on putting coils in the rear of a lux, what I cant find is someone who has actually done a surf rear, mainly different setups.
Just get yourself a toyots Surf rear chasis cut and use all the brackets
from that.Which you already have.
The only hard part would be sorting out the fuel tank and handbrake as the Hilux chasis is 20mm longer in the mid section.
I converted to rear discs and used twin cables.
You will have to use a fuel tank from a Surf.
The rear brake lines along the chasis will have to be re-done.
Being an IFS Hilux the rear part of the Chasis is the same ie:width.
Do not use the surf lower control arms.
Get a set of lower 80 series cruiser arms as they are longer.
The surf arms are very short and use a low hanging chasis bracket.
Don't use this bracket.
With the cruiser arms being longer you can mount them up higher and forward on the chasis while still keeping them relative flat and not screwing up the geometry.(engineers love them as they are factory toyota items)

I also ran a LRA tank and just sold it as it was to much work to change it.
I fitted a Surf tank (65 liters) and a rear Prado tank (95 liters)
where the spare wheel went.
You could get a tank from LRA to suit the coil rear end but it's all
dollars and it will still be 20mm to short.
Got a prado tank at the LPG fitter for free.
As far as ride goes it is so much better than leafs.
If your keen you can then do the front and get rid of the IFS.
Put in a bundera front end so you got coils all round.
If you do the work yourself it is actually cheaper than leafs.
Can pick up a complete Bundera front with front chasis cut for around $1000.
The bonus is you get a front Hi pin diff and factory cross over steering
with the Bundera front.
