I think the vent on the bonnet was more to stop a high pressure buildup in the engine bay, venting out the hot air so that cool air could enter from the front more easily. Could well be wrong though.

I'd also assume at speed there would be some more vacuum in the rear facing snorkle - does someone feel like rigging up a monometer and finding out for us?

hey i hear all these arguments on whats right and wrong
but common sense tells me the motor will only draw what it needs if you put it facing back
if you put it forward dont you thing it will work like the old gt forced air induction

any way i thought ,a snorkel was all about getting your air intake higher then the water you where crossing not about power

Well in reality a good snorkel should be as good an upgrade as what the ricer boys do with their "cold air intakes" etc. As it does the same thing; Feeds fresh, non engine bay air into the airbox directly. Having said that I wouldn't have a clue as to facing the inlet which way is better. Logic makes you think that facing forward will "force" air into the engine, and possible create a few more hp, but stranger things have happened....

As for me, i'd need one for a 2nd generation 4Runner, but on the drivers side, not the original passenger side. The new quad cam V8 has the air intake on the opposite side to what the V6 had... ;)

but if the snorkel was exactly the same as that it would need to face backwards to avoid crud going down it

ash_on_mtb wrote:what about the old slr5000 toranas with the huge bonnet buldge, designed to allow the low pressure air that pillows up against the windscreen to be sucked into the engine, kinda like a crude snorkel, just backwards and on top of the bonnet...? They must have worked okay, as didn't brockie go alright in one of them, before the flux capacitator or whatever chrystal thing he had?!
Hmm good point Ash but then why do the later model Brocks have those cold air trays that run under the bonnet and forward? Also my VC Brocky has an extension on the std air cleaner that allows it to suck air from the front ... but maybe that is more about "cold" air than ram feeding air. I'm not sure what the intention of the A9X's rear facing scoop was .. but it looked tough :D

I recall when racing 125 GP bikes in the early 90's, we experimented with fairings that pressurised the air boxes and they were successful to the point we had to jet up the motor to avoid it running lean at Phillip island where we were reaching max speed of 220 kph. We got that idea from the aprilia 125 that Gary McCoy was allowed to bring back into Australia when he was signed to the AGV Attack team.

I think also some of the more modern superbikes have "ram air" type systems although that may be more about marketing than performance. Anyway, I stick to what I felt when running one on my Rangie ... now I know it never had much horsepower anyway but when the reverse facing snorkel impacted on the little power it had it was noticeable.

And to those that are concerned about crud getting into your snorkel, a simple mesh over the inlet will stop that (ala plastic mesh arrangements on safari's etc) even though you would be struggling to get anything that big into it in one go unless a mate sticks an empty tinnie in it :D

Think about it this way ... do you see any manufacturer building an exhaust pipe that faces forward? Probably not because that would hinder the exhaust gasses getting out of the pipe ... reverse that and think about what one of the advantages a snorkel represents ... cool air "forced at speed" into the air cleaner ... it can only help.

Sure snorkels do raise the height of your water proofing (but only if you ensure you block up all other avenues for the water to get in and by that I mean stuff like the standard water valve in landcruiser air cleaners) but they can also provide a benefit to the motor by creating a "forced" (when moving forward) cool air charge.

A rear facing snorkel will effect your power for the pure reason than you'll be sucking lower pressure air rather than higher pressure (forced) air.

Think about what forced induction does. It feeds your engine with higher pressure air. If you can increase this pressure (without the assistance of a turbo or supercharger) then your engine be be getting more oxygen which = more power.

Air being forced down the pipe will be of higher pressure than air being sucked in from behind.

I'm definately interested in one for a GQ patrol and one for a Feroza. Let me know when you get this up and running.

Will you be making them to fit a safari style head/donaldson filter or more like the example of the jeep with the angled cut out like most truck exhausts? My 2c is that the safari/donaldson head will be better because you can change it to either as needed, esp for long outback trips.

I am in Mt Waverley so not far away if you need someone to guineapig anything.

Exhaust Doctor
I would like a pair for my GQ Nissan running a chevy - that is one out each side. Currently I have a Safari one on the left side, so I would like the ss one to come out of the same hole and a corrosponding place on the right side. Plus the mounting holes on the A pillar would need to be the same as a Safari

The single snorkle is restricting the air intake - losing power.

Also a T bend would be helpful where they join together.

I coming to Melbourne on the 13 of may and back on 22 May, any chance of having one ready by those dates - what info do you need.

Cheers

It is the air intake on the Tonanas, Right at the base of the windscreen is a high pressure area which actually pushes the air into the rear mounted scoop.

If you can find someone to cut the hole that know what they are doing, I'm happy to let you use my 80 series as a tester.

Going to throw a spanner in the workz.

The snorkel in stainless takes about 4 hours to make and fit. I watched 5 being built in the last 3 weeks. .5" for a pathfinder - and 4" on performance GQ's. They look unreal and are easy to polish.

You only gain a pressurising effect at 110km/h plus. - you gain by less leaves and sticks into your filter, and your gps aerial can be mounted there nice and safe as well.

I wont hijack the thread - but if anyone sees Kill Bills car at outback this year - you'll see who makes them and the difference between rubber turns and mandrel turns. Actually i know of 4 cars going to outback sporting these... :D

Anyone who knows me will know where I'm talking about anyways...
