hi all,
i have a few weeks off work so im taking the time to get some work done on the ute which has been put off for a while,it is a 1983 2.4L diesel hilux
The most serious problem is that i think the clutch has packed it in, i was driving home and got a few minutes from home and i could not get a gear and now if i put it into gear and try to move off the car will not move. It looks like the rear main seal has been leaking and this may have lead to the problem. does this sound like a clutch problem? if so what else should i replace when the gearbox is out?
next problem is that there is a lot of movement in the steering wheel/column,if i grab the wheel it moves up and down and side to side, what should i be looking at as the problem here?
and last of all, the front diff yolk is loose, can this be repaired or i would i be better off looking for a secondhand diff.
any help would be much appreciated!
cheers
rob

I have some 2nd hand clutches that work fine, just upgraded them with the engine conversions.

clutch
Definatley your clutch is buggered. I had the same problem with the rear main seal leaking in my 2.4. Get yourself a new clutch kit, rear main seal and a spigot bearing. A lot of people don't replace the spigot bearing but for $8 or so it saves you having to pull the box out again when it starts howling. If the rear main was leaking enough the clutch gets soaked in oil and you cant get it out. i think it was around $120 for the clutch kit (clutch plate, pressure plate and throwout bearing) and around $10 from a bearing shop for the rear main seal.

got the gearbox out and the clutch is well and truly shagged,it is totally covered in oil so i will be putting in a new rea main seal as well as a front gearbox seal, what do i need to do to replace the gearbox front seal?is it as easy as just removing the nuts holding the bellhousing on or is it more complicated than that?
also what is the best way to remove the flywheel,as i dont have acess to a rattle gun so would it be ok just to jam it up with something to remove the nuts?
any suggestions would be much appreciated

Instead of jamming it up with something... have a mate hold the other end of the crank on the pulley with another socket... The compression in the motor will work with you aswell, shouldnt moce too much.macklux83 wrote:got the gearbox out and the clutch is well and truly shagged,it is totally covered in oil so i will be putting in a new rea main seal as well as a front gearbox seal, what do i need to do to replace the gearbox front seal?is it as easy as just removing the nuts holding the bellhousing on or is it more complicated than that?
