Advice on fj40 shorty
I am chasing some advice on buying an FJ 40, the current one I am looking at has had a 307 chev put in it with the original running gear (4sp box), can anyone let me know if this mix will allow me to sit on the 100km/hr mark without killing the old girl, we plan to make an odd trip to Fraser but mainly she will be run around the local area.
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

pcman your right on the money there i had a 3b with a 4 speed runnin 33s and the eng was revin hard at top speed
i converted it to a 5 speed and wacked a set of marks adapter gears the
under n overdrive gears in it
now the eng is not powerfull enough to push the rig allong in 5th gear
but works a treat when in 4th
but they will be removed as im going to fit 35s to the truck so il replace them with just underdrive gears only
as for the 5 speed swap i had to change the input shaft from memory
but another guy on the forum fitted a 5 speed from a 60 series with no prob
only thing you have to do is get the tailshafts to suit wich i did and now have to get the shafts replaced or modded as im extending the wheelbase n fitting 100 series coils n diffs

Im here for the sausage!
what gearbox, what diff ratio's... standard, a 4 speed 40 will be turning 2500 -2600 when the speedo reads 100 ks an hourUltima RB wrote:My 2F pushes the FJ40 along at 100km/h no worries with 31's, revs around 2000rpm. Would like an extra gear though. Only problem is the bad aerodynamics causing lots of wind noise. Anyone fitted a truck wind foil to their bonnet? Make much of a difference?
my biggest concern is the T case, the early 4 speed case is a pain in the ass, i've killed 3 behind a 2f, and one behind a diesel. 1 word, weak
Spit my last breath
My FJ40 with 4 spd & 2F, 31in tyres, 4.111 diffs does about 2300rpm at 100kph. Go to 33's & you'll be about 2100rpm which would be pretty comfortable. 35 in tyres will have you cruising at under 2000rpm. A 5 spd would be nice, but bigger tyres gives a decent overdrive with a few other advantages as well.... Just make sure you put disc brakes in first!
