Can you tell me the easiest way to disconnect pollution gear from a '92 3.9L Rangie - preferably without removing it all?

What pollution gear ????
There is none which affects performance.
92 3.9 has no catalyst or oxygen sensor as it is classed as a commercial vehicle in Australia, so has less stringent pollution regulations than a car..
The injection settings are the only pollution gear and the only way you can change the settings is with a Unichip or aftermarket ECU.

advancing the ignition will give better performance and probably increases NOX>
The only other thing is the evaporative emission control from the tank and this does not affect the engine .

Thanks Philip.
The evaporative emission stuff is causing the tank and/or lines and/or pump to make a high-pitched humm - very noticeable to passengers. Any ideas??

Never had a problem with mine.
The purge valve is controlled by the ECU to open at certain times. you might check whether it works by applying 12volts to earth. Its the thing connected to the carbon canister with hose to the plenum.
Other than that check the runs of all the tubes to see if there are any kinks.
The plastic tanks can also crack around the vent nipples which could cause a pressure leak. To check you would have to drop the tank.
You could maybe drive with the fuel cap loose and purge valve disconnected to see if the noise is still there.
carbon canisters are supposed to be replaced every so often, so it may be full, but nobody does.
