V8 conversion

Post by lux kid »

so now ive finaly go my shorty running and after the long weekend ive found the gear box is shagged.

latter on i want to put a VN 5L V8 in to it. but i am undiside on running the commo auto or the nissan manual. currently the truck is a td42 with 4.1 ratios. look at runnind 36 inch tyres and want to race it latter.

will i need to change any running gear to run the v8 eg. gear box, transfer or ratios.?

if i can run the deisel box with the v8 then i will rebuild it, if not i will run an auto.
any info or links would be go.

You will be able to get an adaptor to mate the 5L commo to the nissan gearbox, or else you should be able to use the commo automatic with your nissan transfer case.

I'd probably prefer the manual myself.

for some kit options:

Should be about a grand from dellows, for bellhousing, clutch plate, and engine mounts. Not sure about marks prices, but someone will know.

Two question marks I'd put over the exercise are:

- what about getting a petrol GQ to take apart instead? The diesel one you've got is worth more than a petrol would be, so maybe you should break up the less popular one.

- Is the 5.0L commodore motor really worth the effort? I am not sure that it will really scream with power the way you might be hoping. Reports vary on the outcome so I'd be looking to test drive someone else's holden-V8-powered GQ first, personally.

I reckon you'd be better to change diff ratios still.

I run 35's with 4.1's and she lacks power big time. you basically lose a gear, so low 1st for nearly all decent hills.

On road (heading to and from bush) it is just sad  to be overtaken up a hill by a datsun 180B with the Fijian Rugby team's whole forward's pack onboard with their luggage in a wooden box trailer on tow

I reckon the power of the 5.0L will make a massive difference, but 36" is a big tyre!

after my VN 5.0L conversion to be honest i would go a different engine don't get me wrong its great but for the price you going to pay to get a v8 in there i would prob go a different engine even turbo a 4.2 GQ petrol engine there are nissan V8 imports you can get fairly cheap with alot more power

i just reckon for the money you will spend and it will be around 7000-8000 if you put it in yourself there are better engine options

RoeDao is putting a 5lt into a GQ auto ATM, supplying a full marks kit that is very complete, should prove to be easy as.

Would stick to the 5 speed

Cost doing it yourself with the loom etc provided you get a well priced engine around the $5k to 6K mark
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!
